For five months, I had spent every day solving problems before Derek ever had to notice they existed.<\/p>\n

Then I broke my arm.<\/p>\n

And suddenly, I couldn\u2019t keep doing his half of parenting too.<\/p>\n

Two days earlier, I had been sitting on the nursery floor, struggling to fasten Luke\u2019s sleeper using only my left hand.<\/p>\n

My right arm was trapped inside a cast.<\/p>\n

Miles had started fussing behind me, and the cup of tea I had made earlier sat untouched on the changing table.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was hoping you might remember what the kitchen is for. Or at least know how to order takeout.\u201d<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cI worked ten hours today.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I fell down the stairs yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n

The doctor had put my fractured arm in a cast and specifically warned me not to lift Luke or Miles with it until it healed.<\/p>\n

Miles began crying harder.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan you get him?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

Derek checked his phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t even changed clothes yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe doesn\u2019t care what you\u2019re wearing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHope.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI just got home.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo did you stop being their father when you pulled into the driveway?\u201d<\/p>\n

His mouth tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cI pay the bills.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019m not coming home from work just to start another shift.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another shift.<\/p>\n

That phrase stayed with me.<\/p>\n

As if being a father was overtime.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need help for a few weeks,\u201d I said carefully. \u201cCome home an hour earlier when you can. Take a day off if you have one. Ask whether you can work from home sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a job.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo did I before maternity leave.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cExactly. You\u2019re home now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWith two babies.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re better at this than I am anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m better because I do it every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miles started crying louder.<\/p>\n

Derek sighed as though the sound irritated him.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan\u2019t you just handle him?\u201d<\/p>\n

I went completely quiet.<\/p>\n
