But at the party, I overheard two women talking about the dresses Clara had chosen for them.<\/p>\n

The dress itself was gorgeous.<\/p>\n

Honestly, that made the whole thing worse.<\/p>\n

It was made of deep blue satin with a narrow waist and delicate sleeves \u2014 exactly the sort of dress I might have chosen for myself before pregnancy changed what felt comfortable on my body.<\/p>\n

My daughter was only three months old.<\/p>\n

A few weeks earlier, Clara had called while I was shopping and told me not to buy anything for her anniversary dinner because she had already ordered my dress.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t think much of it.<\/p>\n

Then the box arrived.<\/p>\n

I opened it.<\/p>\n

Saw the dress.<\/p>\n

Loved it.<\/p>\n

Then I checked the tag.<\/p>\n

I stared at the size for several seconds.<\/p>\n

It was nowhere close to what I wore now.<\/p>\n

At first, I assumed the boutique had made a mistake.<\/p>\n

Still, I decided to try it on.<\/p>\n

I stepped into the dress.<\/p>\n

Pulled carefully.<\/p>\n

And stopped.<\/p>\n

It wouldn\u2019t even go over my hips.<\/p>\n

I stood in front of the mirror with one arm tangled awkwardly in the fabric while my baby started fussing from her bassinet.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d I muttered. \u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

I peeled the dress off, folded it back into the box, and immediately called Clara.<\/p>\n

She picked up quickly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. I think the boutique sent the wrong size.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was a pause.<\/p>\n

Then Clara laughed.<\/p>\n

I sat down on the edge of the bed.<\/p>\n

\u201cClara, I literally can\u2019t get it on.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

I frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you mean, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe party is two weeks away.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo?\u201d<\/p>\n

Another little laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you still have time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTo lose some weight.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked toward my daughter.<\/p>\n

She was lying in her bassinet with one tiny fist beside her cheek, wearing the deeply offended expression she always had whenever feeding time was even slightly delayed.<\/p>\n
