She crossed the ballroom in a navy sequined gown, placed a cream envelope beside my plate, and smiled as though she were giving me a birthday present.<\/p>\n

\u201cHappy birthday, Natalie,\u201d she said. \u201cGrant thought it was time you stopped pretending this marriage was still alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

My husband stood about ten feet away with his phone raised, recording everything.<\/p>\n

Several officers at my table went silent.<\/p>\n

My battalion commander looked at me, then at Grant.<\/p>\n

I could hear forks touching plates three tables away.<\/p>\n

Grant laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome on. Open it.\u201d<\/p>\n

So I did.<\/p>\n

Petition for dissolution of marriage.<\/p>\n

Temporary possession of the house.<\/p>\n

Division of accounts.<\/p>\n

And a demand that I reimburse Grant for \u201cimprovements\u201d made to property he claimed belonged to both of us.<\/p>\n

That last part almost made me smile.<\/p>\n

Three weeks earlier, while I was at Fort Liberty preparing for an inspection, my bank had called about a $186,000 home-equity transfer tied to the Raleigh house my grandfather left me before I married Grant.<\/p>\n

I had never authorized any loan.<\/p>\n

Yet the paperwork carried my signature.<\/p>\n

So did a deed supposedly transferring half the property to Grant.<\/p>\n

I said nothing to him.<\/p>\n

Instead, I met with my attorney, the bank\u2019s fraud department, and a Wake County detective.<\/p>\n

We discovered that an old power of attorney I\u2019d given Grant before a deployment had been revoked two years earlier.<\/p>\n

Someone had submitted a copy as though it were still valid.<\/p>\n

We also discovered where $94,000 of the borrowed money had gone.<\/p>\n

Straight into Diane\u2019s account.<\/p>\n

And now she stood over me at the Army Ball, waiting for me to cry.<\/p>\n

I took the pen from the envelope and signed the acknowledgment of service.<\/p>\n

Not the settlement.<\/p>\n

Grant zoomed in with his phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cSee?\u201d Diane said loudly. \u201cThat wasn\u2019t so hard. Now the house can finally stay in the Keller family.\u201d<\/p>\n

My commander\u2019s expression changed immediately.<\/p>\n

I placed the papers neatly beside my plate.<\/p>\n

Then I stood.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Grant lowered his phone slightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor serving these in front of eighty-seven witnesses. And thank you for recording your mother explaining what you planned to do with my house.\u201d<\/p>\n

His smile vanished.<\/p>\n

Then the ballroom doors opened.<\/p>\n

A woman in a gray suit entered beside two uniformed police officers.<\/p>\n

She looked directly at Grant.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Keller,\u201d she said, \u201cplease keep that phone exactly where it is.\u201d<\/p>\n
