I spent the entire morning trying to make sure my husband wouldn\u2019t notice us at the airport.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

My seven-year-old son and I had secretly bought tickets on one of his flights because Mason wanted nothing more than to surprise his dad after we landed.<\/p>\n

Everything was going perfectly.<\/p>\n

Until Tyler made an announcement over the cabin speakers.<\/p>\n

And within seconds, I realized the surprise wasn\u2019t ours anymore.<\/p>\n

My husband, Tyler, had been a commercial pilot for almost nine years.<\/p>\n

Somehow, during all that time, our seven-year-old son had never once been a passenger on one of his flights.<\/p>\n

Mason hated that.<\/p>\n

Every time Tyler packed his overnight bag, Mason followed him through the house asking questions.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you flying the big plane today?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot today, buddy. Sometimes I do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo the passengers know you\u2019re my dad?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cProbably not.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

Tyler would laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe someday they will.\u201d<\/p>\n

A few weeks earlier, Tyler mentioned that he had a short Saturday flight to Chicago.<\/p>\n

He would fly there, have several hours between assignments, then return home that evening.<\/p>\n

Almost immediately, I had an idea.<\/p>\n

It seemed harmless.<\/p>\n

Sweet, even.<\/p>\n

I secretly bought two tickets on his flight.<\/p>\n

One for me.<\/p>\n

One for Mason.<\/p>\n

When I explained the plan, Mason nearly exploded with excitement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to surprise Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter we land.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I go into the cockpit?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the crew says yes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I wear my pilot shirt?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAbsolutely not. Your father will recognize you from across the airport.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mason took the secrecy more seriously than anything else in his life.<\/p>\n

He packed headphones.<\/p>\n

Gummy bears.<\/p>\n

A small toy airplane.<\/p>\n

And a drawing he had made of Tyler standing proudly in front of a jet.<\/p>\n

Across the top, in enormous crooked letters, he had written:<\/p>\n

BEST PILOT EVER.<\/p>\n

The airport nearly ruined everything.<\/p>\n

We were heading toward security when Mason suddenly grabbed my sleeve.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom. Mom!\u201d<\/p>\n

I followed his stare.<\/p>\n

Tyler was walking through the terminal less than thirty feet away in full uniform, pulling his flight bag behind him.<\/p>\n

I grabbed Mason\u2019s hand and dragged him into the nearest gift shop.<\/p>\n

We hid behind a rack of sweatshirts while I pretended to study refrigerator magnets.<\/p>\n

Mason was shaking with silent laughter.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is awesome,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re enjoying this way too much.\u201d<\/p>\n

Once Tyler disappeared around the corner, we continued toward our gate.<\/p>\n

I remember feeling ridiculously happy.<\/p>\n

Looking back, I hate how clearly I remember that feeling.<\/p>\n

We boarded near the end because I didn\u2019t want Mason hanging around the gate long enough for someone to recognize him.<\/p>\n

Our seats were toward the back.<\/p>\n

Mason immediately pressed his forehead against the window.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you think Dad knows?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo chance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat if I tell a flight attendant?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. That ruins the surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOne flight attendant?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMason.\u201d<\/p>\n

He grinned and pretended to zip his mouth shut.<\/p>\n

A few minutes later, the cabin door closed.<\/p>\n

I helped him fasten his seat belt.<\/p>\n

Then the speakers crackled.<\/p>\n

Tyler\u2019s voice filled the plane.<\/p>\n

Mason\u2019s entire face lit up.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom,\u201d he whispered excitedly. \u201cThat\u2019s Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n
