Bright scarves.<\/p>\n

Loud laughter.<\/p>\n

Cinnamon perfume.<\/p>\n

Hands that were always moving.<\/p>\n

Now she looked twenty years older than sixty-eight.<\/p>\n

Her hair was thin and gray.<\/p>\n

Her wrists were bruised.<\/p>\n

And she was wearing a faded housekeeping uniform.<\/p>\n

I stood frozen in the foyer with my suitcase behind me.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked up.<\/p>\n

Her eyes moved over my face without recognition.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d she whispered. \u201cGuests aren\u2019t supposed to use this entrance.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach turned to ice.<\/p>\n

Then my brother, Darren, appeared at the top of the staircase.<\/p>\n

He was wearing the robe I had bought our father before Dad died.<\/p>\n

Darren froze when he saw me.<\/p>\n

\u201cClaire?\u201d<\/p>\n

I smiled.<\/p>\n

Barely.<\/p>\n

He recovered quickly.<\/p>\n

He always did.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, look who finally remembered she has a family. The international superstar herself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI called.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce every few months.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI sent money every month.\u201d<\/p>\n

His smile tightened.<\/p>\n

Then his wife, Brooke, appeared behind him holding a crystal wineglass.<\/p>\n

At eleven in the morning.<\/p>\n

She looked me over as though I were a delivery driver who had shown up at the wrong address.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should\u2019ve told us you were coming,\u201d she said. \u201cThe guest suite isn\u2019t ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked back at my mother.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy is Mom dressed like that?\u201d<\/p>\n

Darren laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe likes helping around the house. Gives her something to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom lowered her head.<\/p>\n

Then started scrubbing again.<\/p>\n

I crouched beside her.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, it\u2019s me. Claire.\u201d<\/p>\n

She flinched when I touched her shoulder.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d she whispered. \u201cClaire lives far away.\u201d<\/p>\n

Something inside me broke.<\/p>\n

But I didn\u2019t shout.<\/p>\n
