The blade sliced through the white frosting, revealing bright blue filling between the layers.<\/p>\n

The backyard exploded with cheers.<\/p>\n

People clapped, party horns sounded, and blue confetti flew into the air.<\/p>\n

My daughter, Emily, covered her mouth with both hands and immediately started crying.<\/p>\n

I should have been crying too.<\/p>\n

Instead, I stood beside the patio door with my phone pressed tightly against my ear.<\/p>\n

The woman from the bakery was still speaking.<\/p>\n

My voice barely came out.<\/p>\n

Emily had trusted me with one responsibility for the gender reveal.<\/p>\n

The cake.<\/p>\n

Neither she nor Ryan knew whether they were expecting a boy or a girl.<\/p>\n

Their doctor had sealed the result inside an envelope, and I personally delivered it unopened to the bakery.<\/p>\n

I had been ridiculously careful.<\/p>\n

Emily had even laughed when I refused to let her touch the envelope.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, I\u2019m not going to look.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou say that now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have self-control.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou ate three cookies in the car because you couldn\u2019t wait until we got home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan had laughed.<\/p>\n

That conversation had happened ten days earlier.<\/p>\n

Now it was Saturday, and fifty friends and relatives filled our backyard.<\/p>\n

Pink and blue decorations covered the fence.<\/p>\n

Balloons floated above the tables.<\/p>\n

Emily looked radiant.<\/p>\n

The cake sat in the center beneath a glass cover.<\/p>\n

Everything had gone exactly according to plan.<\/p>\n

Until my phone rang.<\/p>\n

The bakery.<\/p>\n

\u201cDette?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease don\u2019t serve the cake.\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed nervously.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman lowered her voice.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a problem with your order.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat kind of problem?\u201d<\/p>\n

She hesitated.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomeone came in this morning and made a change.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe thought she had your permission.\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman explained that someone had arrived at the bakery with my order number, Emily\u2019s full name, and even a copy of the outside of the doctor\u2019s envelope.<\/p>\n

She knew enough details that the employee assumed she had authorization.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe insisted we make a change to the filling,\u201d the woman continued.<\/p>\n

I became confused.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did she change?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe didn\u2019t change the color.\u201d<\/p>\n
