I looked up.<\/p>\n

There we were.<\/p>\n

My husband, Chris, sat on one side of Ethan while I sat on the other. Ethan was between us in his blue team jersey, grinning so widely that, for one wonderful second, he looked like any other 10-year-old boy in the stadium.<\/p>\n

I waved.<\/p>\n

Chris raised both hands.<\/p>\n

Ethan shouted, \u201cWE\u2019RE FAMOUS!\u201d<\/p>\n

People nearby laughed and waved toward the camera.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d already taken more photos that afternoon than I could count, but I reached for my phone again.<\/p>\n

Then the stadium announcer spoke.<\/p>\n

\u201cEthan, we\u2019re very happy you\u2019re here with us today.\u201d<\/p>\n

My son stopped bouncing.<\/p>\n

His face filled the giant screen.<\/p>\n

The announcer continued, \u201cBut there\u2019s something you don\u2019t know about this trip.\u201d<\/p>\n

I glanced at Chris.<\/p>\n

He looked just as confused as I was.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll three of you,\u201d the announcer said, \u201cplease turn around and look behind you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everyone around us began twisting in their seats.<\/p>\n

Ethan grabbed my hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is it, Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know, Captain.\u201d<\/p>\n

We turned.<\/p>\n

A man was walking down the stadium steps.<\/p>\n

Chris stared.<\/p>\n

The color drained from his face.<\/p>\n

\u201cLeo?\u201d<\/p>\n

Behind Leo came Ray from the hospital, carrying Ethan\u2019s battered plastic tabletop football game beneath one arm.<\/p>\n

A nurse from Ethan\u2019s floor followed with Cody and his mother.<\/p>\n

Ethan\u2019s mouth dropped open.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo way.\u201d<\/p>\n

I watched him. Whatever he\u2019d imagined when the announcer told us to turn around, it clearly wasn\u2019t this.<\/p>\n

Then Ray raised the battered tabletop game, and Ethan started laughing.<\/p>\n

Three months earlier, football had still been something ordinary in our house.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sunday afternoons meant Chris yelling at the television, Ethan correcting him, and me pretending I didn\u2019t care while complaining louder than both of them whenever I thought a referee had missed something.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom,\u201d Ethan once told me, laughing, \u201cyou don\u2019t even know the rules.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know cheating when I see it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chris nearly choked on his chips.<\/p>\n

Then Ethan\u2019s cancer stopped responding to treatment.<\/p>\n

One afternoon, his doctor asked Chris and me to step outside his hospital room.<\/p>\n

I remember staring at the tiny cartoon football Ethan had taped to his door while the doctor talked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m truly sorry,\u201d he said. \u201cThe treatment isn\u2019t working the way we\u2019d hoped.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chris asked every question.<\/p>\n

Was there another trial?<\/p>\n

Another medication?<\/p>\n

Another hospital?<\/p>\n

But I couldn\u2019t move past one sentence.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe may be looking at much less time than we\u2019d hoped.\u201d<\/p>\n

When we went back into Ethan\u2019s room, a football game was playing on television.<\/p>\n

Chris sat beside him.<\/p>\n

Their team scored.<\/p>\n

For one second, Chris shot out of his chair.<\/p>\n

\u201cYES!\u201d<\/p>\n

Ethan burst out laughing.<\/p>\n

Chris immediately leaned toward him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou okay, Captain?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ethan\u2019s smile faded slightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cDad, I laughed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m allowed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chris leaned back.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course you are.\u201d<\/p>\n

I raised my phone.<\/p>\n

Click.<\/p>\n

Ethan looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

But after that, almost everything became something I felt compelled to save.<\/p>\n

Ethan eating cereal.<\/p>\n

Sleeping with one sock on.<\/p>\n

The disgusted face he made at hospital gelatin.<\/p>\n

The hours he spent arguing football statistics with Chris.<\/p>\n

Photos.<\/p>\n

Short videos.<\/p>\n

Voice recordings.<\/p>\n

I told myself I was collecting our life.<\/p>\n
