Dr. Rivers hesitated.<\/p>\n

I almost laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow generous of him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Rivers gave me a sad smile.<\/p>\n

Then I walked away carrying the last secret my husband had ever kept from me.<\/p>\n

Two months earlier, secrets hadn\u2019t been part of our marriage.<\/p>\n

Baby names had.<\/p>\n

\u201cStill counts.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is not a reason to name a human being.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt made you smile.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked down at my stomach.<\/p>\n

\u201cCecelia.\u201d<\/p>\n

The baby kicked beneath his hand.<\/p>\n

Mark\u2019s eyebrows lifted.<\/p>\n

\u201cSee? She voted.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe kicked you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStrong approval.\u201d<\/p>\n

I placed my hand over his.<\/p>\n

\u201cCecelia.\u201d<\/p>\n

This time, the name felt different.<\/p>\n

It felt like our daughter\u2019s name.<\/p>\n

We had wanted her for years.<\/p>\n

Then, when I was six months pregnant, Mark became seriously ill.<\/p>\n

The doctors told us he likely had no more than three months.<\/p>\n

There was a good chance he would never live long enough to meet our daughter.<\/p>\n

One evening, we were sitting on the porch again when Cecelia kicked so hard my shirt moved.<\/p>\n

Mark watched for a moment, then rested his hand over the spot.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they can use anything when the time comes, I want to donate.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned toward him.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease don\u2019t talk about dying while she\u2019s kicking.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s exactly why I have to, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMark.\u201d<\/p>\n

His thumb moved slowly across my stomach.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I can\u2019t watch her grow up, maybe somebody else can get more time with their family.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t make dying sound noble. I\u2019m already angry enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

His eyes met mine.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m scared too, Sal.\u201d<\/p>\n

My throat tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know how to do this without you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have to know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat if I never know?\u201d<\/p>\n

He was quiet.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen you make it up as you go.\u201d<\/p>\n

I hated that answer.<\/p>\n
