For years, my husband\u2019s family had treated his younger brother, Tyler, like the golden child.<\/p>\n

If Tyler skipped class, their mother blamed the teacher for being boring.<\/p>\n

Roy was 12 years older than Tyler and had practically helped raise him.<\/p>\n

He taught Tyler to ride a bike, helped with homework, attended parent-teacher meetings when their parents were unavailable, and drove him to football practice until Tyler quit midway through the season.<\/p>\n

Whenever Tyler created a problem, Roy stepped in and solved it.<\/p>\n

By 18, Tyler had learned two things.<\/p>\n

His parents would pay for what he needed.<\/p>\n

And Roy would fix whatever went wrong.<\/p>\n

So when Tyler was suspended from school for shoving another student during an argument, my in-laws followed the same pattern.<\/p>\n

They brought him to our house on Friday evening with a suitcase and a bag of snacks.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe already paid for the resort,\u201d my mother-in-law explained. \u201cWe can\u2019t cancel now.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at her.<\/p>\n

They were leaving for a two-week tropical vacation.<\/p>\n

Tyler had only been suspended for five days, but they did not trust him alone at home. Rather than change their plans, they handed their six-foot-tall son to us.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, I already had two toddlers.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Emma was two, and Noah had just turned four.<\/p>\n

Our house was permanently loud, messy, and one lost shoe away from chaos.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t have the energy for this,\u201d I whispered to Roy while his parents unloaded Tyler\u2019s suitcase.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just two weeks,\u201d Roy said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is never just two weeks with your family.\u201d<\/p>\n

He rubbed the back of his neck.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know. I\u2019ll handle him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roy always said that.<\/p>\n

But handling Tyler usually meant shielding him from consequences.<\/p>\n

For the first few days, Tyler barely left our couch.<\/p>\n

He slept until noon, watched videos on his phone, left dirty dishes beside the sink, and ate food I had bought for the children.<\/p>\n

When I asked him to rinse his plate, he said, \u201cI\u2019ll do it later.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later never happened.<\/p>\n

He ignored our rule about locking the front door, dropped wet towels on the bathroom floor, and played videos loudly after the children were asleep.<\/p>\n

Whenever I asked him to lower the volume, he rolled his eyes.<\/p>\n

Roy spoke to him several times.<\/p>\n

Tyler always answered, \u201cYeah, okay,\u201d before returning to his phone.<\/p>\n

By Tuesday, I no longer saw him as an 18-year-old who had made a few mistakes.<\/p>\n

He felt like another child I had been forced to supervise.<\/p>\n

Yesterday afternoon, I finally reached my limit.<\/p>\n

I needed groceries, but Noah refused to put on shoes, and Emma was crying because I had cut her banana \u201cthe wrong way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then I opened the refrigerator.<\/p>\n

No milk. No vegetables. Nothing useful for dinner.<\/p>\n

The supermarket was only a few minutes away, but taking two exhausted toddlers through crowded aisles sounded miserable.<\/p>\n

Tyler was lying on the couch watching a video.<\/p>\n

I stood in the doorway for nearly a minute before asking him.<\/p>\n

\u201cTyler, can you watch the kids for 30 minutes?\u201d<\/p>\n

He glanced up.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI need to run to the supermarket. It is down the street. Keep them in the living room, do not open the front door, and call me if anything happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked at Emma sitting on the rug with her stuffed bunny, then at Noah building a tower from plastic blocks.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is not enough. I need you to actually listen.\u201d<\/p>\n

He sighed and locked his phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m listening.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo snacks unless you ask me. Emma puts everything in her mouth, so watch her carefully. Noah may try to go upstairs. Keep the baby gate closed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ll be fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTyler.\u201d<\/p>\n

He sat up.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got them, Amanda. Go.\u201d<\/p>\n

I should have taken them with me.<\/p>\n
