“Mom, please stay out here.”

For a second, I thought I had heard my daughter wrong.

Cold wind moved between the downtown buildings, tugging at my old charcoal coat and carrying rain across the hotel’s marble entrance. Behind Valeria, revolving glass doors turned beneath warm lights, revealing polished brass, winter flowers, and elegantly dressed guests.

My daughter stood three feet away in a midnight-blue gown I had helped her choose. Her dark hair was swept back, and the diamond earrings I’d given her on her wedding day caught the light.

I searched her face for a joke.

There wasn’t one.

“Stay outside?” I repeated.

Valeria glanced behind her.

Her husband, Mauricio.

His parents, Humberto and Beatriz Vega.

And two couples from their anniversary guest list.

Beatriz tightened her faux-fur wrap and smiled as though an awkward problem had finally been handled.

“Elena,” she said, “we’re simply trying to avoid embarrassment.”

I looked at her.

“Whose?”

Her smile sharpened.

“Everyone’s.”

Humberto adjusted his tuxedo cuff.

“This is one of the most exclusive hotels in Denver,” he said. “The rooftop restaurant doesn’t exactly operate like a neighborhood café.”

“I’m aware.”

My answer amused him.

Beatriz studied my coat and flat leather boots.

“You may not realize how expensive tonight is.”

I remained silent.

“The dinner alone costs more than most people make in a week,” she continued. “Possibly more than you make in a month.”

Mauricio gave the uncomfortable little laugh he always used when his mother said something cruel and he wanted everyone to pretend it was harmless.

I turned to Valeria, expecting her to stop them.

Instead, she stepped closer and touched my sleeve.

“Mom.”

Her voice dropped.

“Please.”

She wouldn’t quite meet my eyes.

“Please what?”

“Don’t make this difficult.”

The wind moved between us.

Valeria glanced toward the entrance.

“Mauricio’s parents reserved the rooftop for their anniversary. Their friends are coming. People from his father’s business circle. It’s formal.”

“I know what formal means.”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“Then say what you meant.”

Her face tightened.
