She asked if everything was okay.<\/p>\n

I said yes.<\/p>\n

For the rest of that day, I moved through my own house like a stranger temporarily living there.<\/p>\n

Careful.<\/p>\n

Silent.<\/p>\n

He closed the door without allowing the latch to click.<\/p>\n

In one hand, he carried a narrow black case.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t switch on a light.<\/p>\n

He knew exactly where he was going.<\/p>\n

Sarah\u2019s side of the bed.<\/p>\n

My entire body went rigid.<\/p>\n
