My husband loved telling people that parenting in our house was split exactly fifty-fifty.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Everyone believed him.<\/p>\n

Especially his mother.<\/p>\n

Then her birthday gave me the perfect opportunity to let him prove it.<\/p>\n

Ezra and I had been married for seven years, and somewhere along the way, I had learned that there was a huge difference between being an involved father and simply looking like one.<\/p>\n

We had two children.<\/p>\n

Sophie was four.<\/p>\n

Charlie was eight months old.<\/p>\n

I loved being their mother.<\/p>\n

What I didn\u2019t love was being the person everyone automatically depended on for everything.<\/p>\n

Ezra and I both worked full-time, yet somehow meals, baths, diapers, preschool drop-offs, doctor appointments, laundry, bedtime routines, and Charlie\u2019s nighttime wake-ups had all become my responsibility.<\/p>\n

Ezra always had an excuse.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have an early meeting tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy back is hurting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou already know how Sophie likes her hair.\u201d<\/p>\n

And one of his favorites:<\/p>\n

\u201cCharlie calms down faster for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sometimes I stared at him and wondered if he realized what he sounded like.<\/p>\n

But the second we visited family, Ezra became Father of the Year.<\/p>\n

At one gathering, he proudly told his uncle,<\/p>\n

\u201cParenting is fifty-fifty in our house.\u201d<\/p>\n

His mother, Diane, smiled proudly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s how I raised him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, I was standing directly behind Ezra with Charlie in my arms while Sophie pulled on my sleeve because she needed to use the bathroom.<\/p>\n

Nobody noticed.<\/p>\n

At another family lunch, Diane pulled me aside while Ezra sat outside drinking beer with his cousins.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know,\u201d she said, \u201csometimes I think Ezra actually does more for the kids than you do.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should realize how lucky you are. A lot of husbands aren\u2019t nearly as involved.\u201d<\/p>\n

My face burned.<\/p>\n

Charlie had woken up three times the previous night.<\/p>\n

Ezra had slept through every cry.<\/p>\n

I wanted to tell her that.<\/p>\n

I wanted to explain that I was the one who knew Charlie\u2019s feeding schedule, Sophie\u2019s preschool calendar, which pajamas she liked, when the diaper bag needed restocking, and where every medicine, toy, bottle, and blanket in our house was located.<\/p>\n

Instead, I said,<\/p>\n

\u201cRight.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the drive home, I finally confronted Ezra.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour mother thinks you do more parenting than I do.\u201d<\/p>\n

He laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe really said that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s hilarious.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t hilarious to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

He glanced at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cClaire, come on. Mom was probably joking.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re taking it too seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned toward the window.<\/p>\n

That response bothered me more than Diane\u2019s comment.<\/p>\n

Because Ezra knew the truth.<\/p>\n

He knew exactly how much I did.<\/p>\n

And he still enjoyed being praised for work he barely noticed.<\/p>\n

The next week was no different.<\/p>\n

Charlie cried at two in the morning.<\/p>\n

I got up.<\/p>\n

Sophie spilled cereal before preschool.<\/p>\n

I cleaned it.<\/p>\n

Ezra kissed us goodbye and announced,<\/p>\n

\u201cBig presentation today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Saturday morning, Sophie asked him to make breakfast with her.<\/p>\n

He cracked two eggs into a bowl and let her stir them.<\/p>\n
