I had wanted to believe her because she seemed desperate for me to.<\/p>\n

But I had never stopped noticing.<\/p>\n

Derek leaned closer, bourbon heavy on his breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s emotional. You interfere, you\u2019ll make things worse for her.\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t hit him.<\/p>\n

That would have given him exactly what he wanted: an angry father he could point to and blame.<\/p>\n

Derek believed marrying her had given him rights to it.<\/p>\n

Outside the restaurant, Emily was shaking so badly she couldn\u2019t unlock her phone.<\/p>\n

I placed my coat around her shoulders and asked only one question.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you want to go home with him?\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked through the restaurant window.<\/p>\n

Inside, Derek was comforting his mother while a waiter cleaned the wine Emily had spilled.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d she breathed.<\/p>\n

I called a domestic-violence advocate I knew from my years working county investigations, then contacted the police.<\/p>\n

When Derek finally walked outside, smiling as though the evening could still somehow be repaired, Emily stepped behind me.<\/p>\n
