They say the people who truly love you will stand beside you when life becomes difficult. What I learned was that sometimes the person who recognizes your pain most clearly isn\u2019t the one who once promised to love you forever.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

A year earlier, I had brought three babies home at once\u2014Mandy, Randy, and Tobby. Three tiny car seats sat across our living-room floor, looking like the most beautiful and overwhelming miracle I had ever seen.<\/p>\n

Nobody had prepared me for what carrying triplets would do to my body. The doctors used clinical phrases like \u201cpelvic floor complications\u201d and \u201cextended postpartum recovery.\u201d I had a much simpler way of describing it: sometimes, especially when I sneezed, laughed too hard, or lifted something heavy, my body didn\u2019t cooperate the way it used to.<\/p>\n

It was embarrassing, but it wasn\u2019t something I had chosen. I was recovering from carrying and delivering three babies.<\/p>\n

On difficult days, I wore discreet protective underwear. I kept the package hidden underneath folded towels in our upstairs bathroom. Only my husband, Richard, knew it was there.<\/p>\n

At first, Richard occasionally teased me about it. I laughed along because I told myself that was simply how we communicated. If I laughed too, maybe it meant we were still on the same team.<\/p>\n

But over time, his jokes became sharper.<\/p>\n

Especially when other people were around.<\/p>\n

One morning, after he made another comment during brunch, I finally asked him to stop.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou worry too much, Bel,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not worried. I just don\u2019t enjoy being the joke.\u201d<\/p>\n

Richard grinned.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s my love language. If I couldn\u2019t tease you, I\u2019d have to hate you.\u201d<\/p>\n

I let it go.<\/p>\n

That year, I let a lot of things go.<\/p>\n

I was exhausted. Three babies needed me constantly, and most days I barely had enough energy to shower, much less defend myself every time my husband said something insensitive.<\/p>\n

There was one person who never laughed, though.<\/p>\n

David.<\/p>\n

He had been Richard\u2019s closest friend since college. He was quiet, thoughtful, and somehow always remembered which baby was which.<\/p>\n

Whenever he visited, he asked how I was sleeping.<\/p>\n

Once, while I was trying to eat dinner with Tobby crying against my shoulder, David reached out.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou look exhausted, Bel. Give him to me and eat while the food\u2019s still hot.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to. Sit down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over the months, I noticed something else.<\/p>\n

Whenever Richard made one of his jokes about me, David\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n

He never argued.<\/p>\n

He never made a scene.<\/p>\n

But his jaw would tighten, and suddenly he would become very interested in warming a bottle or cleaning something nearby.<\/p>\n

Anything except laughing with Richard.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t think much about it.<\/p>\n

I was too busy surviving life with triplets.<\/p>\n

Then came the night everything changed.<\/p>\n

It was the World Cup final, and Richard invited six friends over to watch the game.<\/p>\n

I made a huge pot of chili, filled bowls with chips, and stocked the coffee table with drinks.<\/p>\n

\u201cBel, you\u2019re a queen,\u201d one of the guys said as I carried food into the living room.<\/p>\n

\u201cEnjoy it while it\u2019s hot,\u201d I joked.<\/p>\n

Richard appeared in the doorway and clapped his hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cGentlemen, my wife feeds you, cleans up after you, but apparently she doesn\u2019t laugh at my jokes anymore!\u201d<\/p>\n

Several men chuckled.<\/p>\n

David didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n
