For one final second, I tried to convince myself the evening could still be saved.<\/p>\n

I had spent the entire day preparing that dinner, hoping that good food, warm candles, and familiar traditions might remind everyone that we were still a family.<\/p>\n

Instead, at sixty-eight years old, I was being ordered out of my own dining room.<\/p>\n

And the worst part wasn\u2019t what Linda said.<\/p>\n

It was that my son sat there and said nothing.<\/p>\n

My great-grandson Dylan froze with his spoon halfway to his mouth.<\/p>\n

My late husband Anthony and I had bought it decades earlier on two teachers\u2019 salaries.<\/p>\n

Nobody had handed us that house.<\/p>\n

We had earned it one mortgage payment at a time.<\/p>\n

We clipped coupons at the kitchen table.<\/p>\n

We skipped vacations when the furnace needed repairs.<\/p>\n

We drove an old car years longer than we should have because buying a new one would have meant another monthly payment.<\/p>\n

There were nights Anthony and I sat at that same dining table moving numbers around in a notebook, trying to stretch our paychecks enough to cover the mortgage, groceries, taxes, and raising our son.<\/p>\n

Sometimes the numbers worked.<\/p>\n

Sometimes we simply did without.<\/p>\n

We never complained in front of Edward.<\/p>\n

Anthony tapped it with one finger and smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did it.\u201d<\/p>\n

I still think about that moment.<\/p>\n

Because to Anthony, owning that house meant safety.<\/p>\n

His father had rented the same apartment for thirty years and died still depending on a landlord.<\/p>\n

Anthony had promised himself our family would never live with that uncertainty.<\/p>\n

Once that house was ours, nobody could tell us to pack our belongings and leave.<\/p>\n

Neither of us imagined that decades later, the person trying to push me out would be our own son\u2019s wife.<\/p>\n
