My water bill suddenly doubled while my children were away, and I couldn\u2019t understand how\u2014until I caught my former mother-in-law running a garden hose from my outdoor faucet straight into her swimming pool.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

She laughed when I demanded repayment. What she had forgotten was a secret she\u2019d once told me about that pool\u2014and the HOA was going to be very interested in hearing it.<\/p>\n

The house beside mine had been vacant for exactly nine days when Diana bought it.<\/p>\n

I remember counting because every morning I secretly hoped someone\u2014anyone\u2014would purchase it before my mother-in-law did.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to live closer to my son,\u201d she announced on moving day. \u201cHarold needs his mother nearby.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harold, who was still my husband then, simply shrugged and carried another box inside.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s family,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019ll be fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was anything but fine.<\/p>\n

From the beginning, Diana behaved as though the fence separating our properties was merely decorative.<\/p>\n

She regularly walked into my kitchen without knocking, opened my refrigerator, and took whatever she wanted.<\/p>\n

One morning, she picked up the last carton of eggs.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re almost out,\u201d she said. \u201cYou should buy more. We\u2019re family, and I need food too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDiana, those are for the kids\u2019 breakfast.\u201d<\/p>\n

She barely looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen get up earlier and make them something else.\u201d<\/p>\n

I learned to bite my tongue.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, staying quiet only encouraged her.<\/p>\n

She threw her garbage into our bins because she didn\u2019t want to pay for her own trash service.<\/p>\n

Tools disappeared into her garage and never returned.<\/p>\n

She criticized how I folded clothes, how I raised my children, and how I managed the household.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not much of a homemaker,\u201d she would say. \u201cHarold works all day, and this is what he comes home to?\u201d<\/p>\n

For years, I convinced myself that keeping the peace was worth swallowing my anger.<\/p>\n

Back then, Harold and I argued about money constantly.<\/p>\n

Our household expenses always seemed higher than they should have been, no matter how carefully I budgeted.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re spending too much,\u201d Harold would say while studying the bills. \u201cWater, electricity\u2014everything keeps going up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m watching every dollar,\u201d I insisted. \u201cI don\u2019t understand it either.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe you\u2019re just not keeping track properly.\u201d<\/p>\n

That accusation hurt more than I admitted.<\/p>\n

I started saving receipts.<\/p>\n

I wrote down purchases.<\/p>\n

I checked meters.<\/p>\n

I tracked everything.<\/p>\n

And still, our bills never quite made sense.<\/p>\n

Eventually, I began wondering whether Diana was right about me.<\/p>\n

Maybe I really was careless.<\/p>\n

Maybe I really was terrible with money.<\/p>\n

It would take years before I discovered the real reason those numbers never added up.<\/p>\n

My marriage with Harold didn\u2019t end suddenly.<\/p>\n

It cracked little by little until there was nothing left to repair.<\/p>\n

When we divorced, I kept the house.<\/p>\n

I assumed Diana would eventually move since Harold no longer lived next door.<\/p>\n

She didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

When I cautiously mentioned it, she looked offended.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy would I move? I like this neighborhood.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHarold doesn\u2019t live here anymore, Diana.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is my home now. You don\u2019t get to decide where I live.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time, I thought having my ex-mother-in-law next door was merely annoying.<\/p>\n

I had no idea how much she was actually costing me.<\/p>\n
