Easter dinner was supposed to be the last peaceful meal before I gave my son the answer he didn\u2019t want.<\/p>\n

My name is Margaret Lawson. I\u2019m sixty-two, widowed, and I own a four-bedroom house outside Columbus, Ohio. My husband, Richard, died six years ago. The mortgage had been paid off long before then, and the deed was entirely in my name.<\/p>\n

For three months, my son Daniel, thirty-five, and his wife Vanessa, thirty-three, had been pressuring me to let Vanessa\u2019s parents move in.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s temporary,\u201d Daniel kept saying.<\/p>\n

Temporary became, \u201cThey can have the two upstairs bedrooms.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then Vanessa suggested her father could convert my garage into a workshop.<\/p>\n

I had already said no seven times.<\/p>\n

At Easter dinner, Vanessa\u2019s parents, Frank and Linda Mercer, were sitting at my table when Daniel tried again.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom,\u201d he said, \u201cFrank\u2019s lease ends next month. They need somewhere affordable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey need to find an apartment,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n

Vanessa\u2019s fork hit her plate.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have empty bedrooms!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re my bedrooms.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re being selfish!\u201d Daniel snapped.<\/p>\n

I looked at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t get to volunteer my house.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vanessa stood so quickly her chair scraped backward.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy parents helped us for years! You sit here alone in this giant house and won\u2019t inconvenience yourself for family?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI said no.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was when she grabbed her wine glass.<\/p>\n

For half a second, I thought she was only gesturing with it.<\/p>\n

Then she threw it.<\/p>\n

The glass struck the side of my forehead and shattered against the cabinet behind me.<\/p>\n

Linda screamed.<\/p>\n

Blood immediately ran down my temple.<\/p>\n

Daniel rushed toward me, but Vanessa shouted, \u201cOh, come on! I didn\u2019t mean to hit her!\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t argue.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t cry.<\/p>\n

I pressed a cloth napkin against my head, picked up my purse, and said, \u201cNobody leaves until I say otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel stared at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, you\u2019re overreacting.\u201d<\/p>\n

That sentence settled something inside me.<\/p>\n

I walked outside, got into my SUV, and drove myself to the emergency room.<\/p>\n

At a red light, blood had already soaked through the napkin.<\/p>\n

I took a photograph.<\/p>\n

Then another.<\/p>\n

At the hospital, while a nurse cleaned the cut and prepared four stitches, I opened my phone and texted Rachel Kim, my attorney.<\/p>\n

Phase one is complete.<\/p>\n

She replied thirty seconds later.<\/p>\n

Do not discuss the house with them. Save everything. Police should be notified.<\/p>\n

Minutes later, two Columbus police officers entered the treatment area.<\/p>\n
