\u201cIt\u2019s going to be okay,\u201d Luke murmured to her, barely noticing the chaos of passengers boarding around them. \u201cClover isn\u2019t petty. Looking after you is part of my job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Camellia glanced up at him with watery eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut Luke, this is Clover\u2019s seat. What if she gets upset?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019ll understand.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was when Luke finally noticed me standing in the aisle.<\/p>\n

Instead of looking embarrassed, he looked annoyed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat took you so long?\u201d he asked. \u201cCamellia isn\u2019t feeling well. Just take her seat farther back.\u201d<\/p>\n

I followed his gesture.<\/p>\n

Her assigned seat was a cramped aisle seat beside a crying toddler.<\/p>\n

I looked back at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is my reserved seat, isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Luke stiffened.<\/p>\n

\u201cClover, don\u2019t turn this into a scene. You\u2019re a Senior Director. You\u2019re also my fianc\u00e9e. Can\u2019t you show a little generosity?\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at the man I had planned to marry in eight weeks.<\/p>\n

For five years, I had supported him financially, professionally, and emotionally.<\/p>\n

I had helped build his career almost as carefully as I had built my own.<\/p>\n

And apparently my reward was being pushed into the worst seat on the train so he could comfort his intern.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t argue.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t shout.<\/p>\n

I simply looked at my watch.<\/p>\n

One minute until departure.<\/p>\n

Then I turned my suitcase around and walked toward the exit.<\/p>\n

I stepped onto the platform seconds before the doors closed.<\/p>\n

My phone buzzed almost immediately.<\/p>\n

Luke.<\/p>\n

**What is this supposed to mean?**<\/p>\n

I laughed once, although there was nothing funny about it.<\/p>\n

Then I typed:<\/p>\n

**It means we\u2019re done.**<\/p>\n

After sending it, I contacted our wedding coordinator.<\/p>\n

\u201cFreeze every vendor contract,\u201d I said. \u201cThe wedding is canceled.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then I slipped off my engagement ring.<\/p>\n

The diamond had looked impressive when Luke proposed.<\/p>\n

What no one knew was that I had quietly covered the difference when his budget came up short.<\/p>\n

I dropped it into my bag.<\/p>\n

Then I walked toward the ticket counter.<\/p>\n

Luke probably thought I had just abandoned the trip.<\/p>\n

He was wrong.<\/p>\n

We were traveling to Boston for one of the biggest corporate negotiations our firm had handled all year.<\/p>\n
