That afternoon, he wore a navy Brioni suit and the self-satisfied expression of a man convinced Washington had finally recognized his importance.<\/p>\n

Richard was fifty-two, a senior defense-industry consultant who had spent the last six months telling anyone who would listen that he had been \u201cpersonally invited\u201d to a White House military-service ceremony.<\/p>\n
