She knew the names of Emily\u2019s friends.<\/p>\n

She remembered rehearsals, projects, and school events.<\/p>\n

My husband traveled constantly for work, so Linda had gradually become the person Emily could rely on whenever one of us wasn\u2019t available.<\/p>\n

I told myself I was grateful.<\/p>\n

Sometimes, though, gratitude felt uncomfortably similar to jealousy.<\/p>\n

I looked toward my laptop.<\/p>\n

Her expression changed slightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cDefinitely.\u201d<\/p>\n

She didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n

She just leaned a little harder against my knee.<\/p>\n

I had no idea it would be the last time I ever touched her long hair.<\/p>\n

The next afternoon, shortly after five, I was buried in emails when the front door opened.<\/p>\n

No answer.<\/p>\n

I heard Emily hurry across the floor toward the stairs.<\/p>\n

When I stepped out of the kitchen, I caught sight of her.<\/p>\n

She was wearing a huge black hoodie.<\/p>\n

The hood was pulled so tightly around her face that I could barely see her.<\/p>\n

It was over ninety degrees outside.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmily, why are you wearing that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m cold.\u201d<\/p>\n

She kept climbing.<\/p>\n

Something felt wrong.<\/p>\n

Then sunlight hit the shoulder of her hoodie.<\/p>\n

Small brown hairs clung to the black fabric.<\/p>\n

My chest tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmily?\u201d<\/p>\n

She disappeared upstairs.<\/p>\n

I followed.<\/p>\n

She was sitting on the edge of her bed with her hood still pulled over her head and her knees pressed against her chest.<\/p>\n

I sat beside her.<\/p>\n

Slowly, I reached for the hood.<\/p>\n
