Graduations.<\/p>\n

Random Sunday dinners.<\/p>\n

Somehow, they always became my responsibility.<\/p>\n

I planned the menu, bought groceries, cooked, cleaned, and smiled while Melissa offered criticism disguised as jokes.<\/p>\n

Too salty.<\/p>\n

Too dry.<\/p>\n

Too fancy.<\/p>\n

Too cheap.<\/p>\n

Daniel\u2019s answer was always the same.<\/p>\n

Tonight, I had finally decided to stop protecting everyone from her mouth.<\/p>\n

Melissa\u2019s husband, Scott, kept his eyes on his plate.<\/p>\n

Daniel cleared his throat.<\/p>\n

\u201cMelissa, maybe apologize.\u201d<\/p>\n

She snapped toward him.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, please. Emily set me up.\u201d<\/p>\n

There it was.<\/p>\n

I leaned back.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou knew I thought you cooked.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI never said I did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou could\u2019ve corrected me!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore or after you insulted the food?\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa shoved her chair backward.<\/p>\n

Diane no longer looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n

She looked furious.<\/p>\n

Then Melissa\u2019s nine-year-old daughter, Sophie, spoke.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa turned.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou always tell me not to make fun of people\u2019s food.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nobody moved.<\/p>\n

Her fourteen-year-old brother, Ethan, covered his mouth as if coughing.<\/p>\n

Scott muttered, \u201cShe\u2019s got a point.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa looked at her own family as though they had betrayed her.<\/p>\n

Then Diane set down her fork.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmily,\u201d she said, looking at me, \u201chas been feeding this family for years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa opened her mouth.<\/p>\n

Diane raised a hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I think tonight we\u2019re finally going to talk about the way you treat her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dinner, apparently, was only getting started.<\/p>\n

Melissa crossed her arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d Diane said calmly.<\/p>\n

Daniel shifted beside me.<\/p>\n
