Everyone else had opened something.<\/p>\n

Torn ribbons covered the floor. There were perfume boxes, sneakers, gift cards, watches, toys, and enough wrapping paper scattered around my mother-in-law\u2019s living room to hide the hardwood.<\/p>\n

But beneath the Christmas tree, there was nothing with Emily Carter written on it.<\/p>\n

My sixteen-year-old daughter sat beside me on the couch, shoulders straight and chin lifted.<\/p>\n

Three weeks earlier, Emily had accused her grandmother, Patricia, of taking money from the college savings account Daniel and I had created for her.<\/p>\n

Emily discovered it accidentally while reviewing a bank statement during a financial-aid workshop.<\/p>\n

Patricia called it a misunderstanding.<\/p>\n

Then she called Emily disrespectful.<\/p>\n

By Christmas morning, most of Daniel\u2019s family had accepted Patricia\u2019s version.<\/p>\n

Apparently, they had agreed on a punishment without saying it openly.<\/p>\n

No presents for Emily.<\/p>\n

Twenty-three relatives.<\/p>\n

Not one had broken ranks.<\/p>\n

Patricia finally looked toward us.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe next year,\u201d she said lightly, swirling wine in her glass, \u201cEmily will understand that accusations have consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n

A few people laughed awkwardly.<\/p>\n
