My husband called me on a Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need you to come. There\u2019s a baby here.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stopped wiping the kitchen counter.<\/p>\n

\u201cJames, whose baby?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease. Just come.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some sentences change the entire temperature of a room.<\/p>\n

That was one of them.<\/p>\n

I looked at the clock.<\/p>\n

2:27 p.m.<\/p>\n

Our youngest wouldn\u2019t be home from preschool for another hour. The older boys were still at school.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat hospital?\u201d<\/p>\n

He told me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are you there?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll explain when you get here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJames.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n

He sounded wrong.<\/p>\n

Not exactly guilty.<\/p>\n

Not exactly frightened.<\/p>\n

Something in between.<\/p>\n

I drove there wearing the same shirt I\u2019d been cleaning the kitchen in.<\/p>\n

You have to understand what the word \u201cbaby\u201d means in our house.<\/p>\n

We have three boys.<\/p>\n

Nine, seven, and four.<\/p>\n

Loud, messy, wonderful boys.<\/p>\n

Our home is filled with muddy shoes, plastic dinosaurs, baseball gloves, and arguments over who gets to sit closest to the television.<\/p>\n

I love them more than anything.<\/p>\n

But we had wanted a daughter.<\/p>\n

God, we had wanted one.<\/p>\n

After our third son was born, my doctor asked James to come to an appointment because she wanted him to hear the news directly from her.<\/p>\n

I remember thinking that was strange.<\/p>\n

Then I saw her expression.<\/p>\n

She used the word \u201cprobably.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not could.<\/p>\n

Not there\u2019s a risk.<\/p>\n

Probably.<\/p>\n

A fourth pregnancy would probably k:ill me.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

And if it didn\u2019t, I would likely spend much of it in a hospital bed, away from the three children I already had.<\/p>\n

My last pregnancy had already come frighteningly close to disaster.<\/p>\n

Blood pressure problems.<\/p>\n

Bleeding.<\/p>\n

Emergency monitoring.<\/p>\n

A delivery that became chaotic very quickly.<\/p>\n

The doctor didn\u2019t dramatize any of it.<\/p>\n

That somehow made it worse.<\/p>\n

I asked if there was any situation where another pregnancy could be considered safe.<\/p>\n

She said no.<\/p>\n

I asked again using different words.<\/p>\n

Same answer.<\/p>\n

I asked twice more over the next two years.<\/p>\n

Still no.<\/p>\n

Eventually, James stopped coming to those appointments because there was nothing new to hear.<\/p>\n

We had once chosen a name for a daughter.<\/p>\n

Or rather, I had.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d loved it since I was nineteen.<\/p>\n

Clara.<\/p>\n

James always pretended he wasn\u2019t attached to it.<\/p>\n

But years earlier, I once found him writing \u201cClara\u201d on a grocery receipt beside different middle names.<\/p>\n

He claimed he was testing pens.<\/p>\n

Liar.<\/p>\n

After the doctor\u2019s warning, I packed away the baby things.<\/p>\n

Most had belonged to the boys, but there were neutral sleepers, blankets, bottles, and a bassinet sheet my mother had embroidered.<\/p>\n

I suggested donating everything.<\/p>\n

James said next month.<\/p>\n

Next month became six months.<\/p>\n

Then a year.<\/p>\n

The box remained in the garage.<\/p>\n

Whenever I mentioned it, he said, \u201cNot today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eventually, I stopped asking.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what closing a subject looks like when it isn\u2019t really closed.<\/p>\n

You simply stop speaking about it.<\/p>\n

The last time I allowed myself to talk about another baby, I cried.<\/p>\n

Not because I didn\u2019t love our life.<\/p>\n

Because I loved it enough to know there was one version of it I would never experience.<\/p>\n

James held my hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur boys need their mother more than we need a daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n

He meant it.<\/p>\n

And I believed him.<\/p>\n

I thought that was the end of the dream.<\/p>\n

Then, eleven years into our marriage, my husband stood at the end of a maternity corridor with his coat still on and his eyes red.<\/p>\n

I had never seen James cry.<\/p>\n

Behind him was a hospital room.<\/p>\n

Through the glass, I could see part of a plastic bassinet.<\/p>\n

Something tiny moved beneath a pink blanket.<\/p>\n

I stopped walking.<\/p>\n

\u201cJames.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need you to sit down.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTell me why I\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t sit.<\/p>\n

He stared at the floor.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause there\u2019s something I have to ask you,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I need you to hear all of it before you answer.\u201d<\/p>\n

My mind immediately went somewhere ugly.<\/p>\n

I wish I could say it didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

I wish I trusted my husband so completely that seeing him outside a maternity room with a newborn girl inside didn\u2019t send one thought straight through me.<\/p>\n

His baby.<\/p>\n
