Friday nights meant pizza.<\/p>\n

Sunday mornings meant pancakes.<\/p>\n

That sentence hurt more than I wanted to admit.<\/p>\n

For six years, I had worked hard to make sure my son never believed our home was somehow incomplete just because his parents were divorced.<\/p>\n

I froze.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wants to stay here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSince when?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSince he realized he has another option. We\u2019ve already started checking schools in our district.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stood so abruptly that my chair scraped loudly across the kitchen floor.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve been looking at schools without speaking to me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMatt agrees.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen let me talk to Matt.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s busy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJessica.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNoah needs stability.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked across the kitchen at my son\u2019s backpack.<\/p>\n

Matt went silent.<\/p>\n

\u201cPut Noah on.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause you\u2019re upset, and I don\u2019t want you pressuring him.\u201d<\/p>\n

My anger flared.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m his mother.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019m his father.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen explain what suddenly changed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll talk later.\u201d<\/p>\n

The call ended.<\/p>\n

I stood in my kitchen for perhaps ten seconds before grabbing my keys.<\/p>\n

Normally, I was the kind of person who planned everything.<\/p>\n

Forms were completed the same day they arrived.<\/p>\n

Vacations had schedules.<\/p>\n

I even kept spare pencils in my glove compartment because Noah could somehow lose half a dozen in a week.<\/p>\n
