Around the table, expressions shifted one after another as the same notification appeared.<\/p>\n

**Family Emergency Account: Access revoked. Balance transferred to sole owner account.**<\/p>\n

Kayla let out a nervous laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n

I placed my phone beside my plate.<\/p>\n

\u201cA correction.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad immediately stood.<\/p>\n

Kayla turned toward Dad.<\/p>\n

Dad looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen?\u201d I asked. \u201cAfter the flight landed?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom grabbed his arm.<\/p>\n

He snapped, \u201cI did what I had to do. Natalie never says no when it matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

And there it was.<\/p>\n

Not love.<\/p>\n

Expectation.<\/p>\n

The banker explained that the charge had been stopped and that the travel agency would cancel the Hawaii package unless another verified account paid the balance by the following morning.<\/p>\n

Kayla stared at me in disbelief.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re ruining everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cI stopped financing the lie that you earned it.\u201d<\/p>\n

She started crying.<\/p>\n
