Brooke.<\/p>\n

My younger sister had always pressed too hard with a pen. Even as a child, her handwriting left impressions through the next several pages.<\/p>\n

Now those same angry grooves sat beneath a sentence telling me I apparently no longer belonged in my own family.<\/p>\n

One suitcase stood beside the gate.<\/p>\n

The other lay on its side in the grass, the zipper broken and my clothes spilling through the opening.<\/p>\n

I had shipped that suitcase home a week earlier after finishing a two-month commercial redevelopment project overseas.<\/p>\n

Someone had gone through it.<\/p>\n

Several things were missing.<\/p>\n

One wheel was covered in mud.<\/p>\n

Through the living-room curtains, I could see warm light.<\/p>\n

Someone laughed.<\/p>\n

Glasses clinked.<\/p>\n

The smell of grilled steak drifted through an open window.<\/p>\n

They were all inside.<\/p>\n

Mom.<\/p>\n

Dad.<\/p>\n

Brooke.<\/p>\n

And probably Brooke\u2019s boyfriend, Evan, judging by the silver SUV in the driveway.<\/p>\n

Three days earlier, I had sent everyone my flight number.<\/p>\n

Mom replied with a heart.<\/p>\n

Dad wrote, *Drive safe from the airport.*<\/p>\n

Brooke ignored it.<\/p>\n

Nobody had forgotten I was coming.<\/p>\n

My humiliation had been planned.<\/p>\n

For several seconds, I imagined marching inside.<\/p>\n

I imagined slamming Brooke\u2019s note onto the kitchen counter.<\/p>\n

I imagined reminding Dad who had covered the mortgage when his company nearly collapsed.<\/p>\n

I imagined reminding Mom who paid the property taxes the year she spent nearly all her savings helping Brooke survive another \u201ctemporary crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n

I imagined finally saying everything I had swallowed for years.<\/p>\n

Then I heard Brooke through the open window.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019ll make a whole production out of it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

I went still.<\/p>\n

Mom murmured something I couldn\u2019t hear.<\/p>\n

Brooke laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust don\u2019t engage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she said the sentence that changed everything.<\/p>\n

**\u201cShe always comes back. Where else would she go?\u201d**<\/p>\n

Something cold and clear settled inside me.<\/p>\n

They didn\u2019t think I stayed because I loved them.<\/p>\n

They thought I stayed because I had nowhere else.<\/p>\n

That was their mistake.<\/p>\n

I folded the note carefully and slipped it into my handbag.<\/p>\n

Then I picked up both suitcases.<\/p>\n

No screaming.<\/p>\n

No knocking.<\/p>\n

No tears.<\/p>\n

I walked through the gate, loaded everything into my rental car, and drove away.<\/p>\n

Nobody came outside.<\/p>\n

Nobody called my name.<\/p>\n
