Before I could even process that, my sister-in-law Melissa responded in the family group chat.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom already did the hard part by organizing everyone. Make yourself useful, Rachel.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n

For three weeks, my husband Daniel and I had been talking about having the quietest Thanksgiving possible.<\/p>\n

His company had just gone through a brutal restructuring.<\/p>\n

I had spent most of the previous month helping my father recover after knee surgery.<\/p>\n

We were both exhausted.<\/p>\n

And we had specifically agreed that we were not hosting anyone.<\/p>\n

Less than twenty minutes later, the booking confirmation landed in his inbox.<\/p>\n

Two tickets to Paris.<\/p>\n

We were leaving Tuesday night and returning Sunday.<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about Thanksgiving?\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel shut the laptop.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother planned the entire thing. And apparently Melissa believes planning is the difficult part.\u201d<\/p>\n

He shrugged.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure they\u2019ll figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first call came less than fifteen minutes later.<\/p>\n

Patricia.<\/p>\n

Daniel ignored it.<\/p>\n

Then Melissa called.<\/p>\n

Then Daniel\u2019s aunt Susan.<\/p>\n

Then his brother Mark.<\/p>\n

Then Patricia again.<\/p>\n

A few minutes later, the doorbell rang.<\/p>\n

I looked through the window.<\/p>\n

Patricia\u2019s SUV was outside.<\/p>\n

Melissa and Mark had arrived too.<\/p>\n

Daniel stood.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell,\u201d he said. \u201cLooks like Thanksgiving came early.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia rang the bell three more times before Daniel opened the door.<\/p>\n

She marched inside still wearing her coat.<\/p>\n

Melissa followed with her arms crossed.<\/p>\n

Mark came in last, looking like a man who already regretted being there.<\/p>\n

Patricia pointed directly at Daniel.<\/p>\n

\u201cRachel, surely you understand how unreasonable this is.\u201d<\/p>\n

For eight years, I had tried very hard to be the easy daughter-in-law.<\/p>\n

I smiled when Patricia reorganized my kitchen because she believed my system was inefficient.<\/p>\n

I stayed quiet when Melissa criticized our Christmas decorations.<\/p>\n

I hosted family dinners whenever someone declared that our house made the most sense because we had more room.<\/p>\n

I had spent years being agreeable.<\/p>\n

That evening, I suddenly realized how exhausting agreeable had become.<\/p>\n
