I stared into my coffee.<\/p>\n

Outside, frost covered the windows. The temperature had dropped below freezing.<\/p>\n

I was five months pregnant, wearing one of my late husband Marcus\u2019s Army T-shirts because it still carried the faintest trace of his scent.<\/p>\n

None of them noticed the military bracelet around my wrist.<\/p>\n

They saw only a pregnant widow in an old T-shirt who was too exhausted and heartbroken to defend herself.<\/p>\n

That was exactly who they believed I was.<\/p>\n

For nearly twelve years, however, Marcus and I had both served as senior officers in the United States Army.<\/p>\n

Our work required secrecy.<\/p>\n

We never discussed operations, ranks, assignments, or deployment locations with relatives.<\/p>\n

Around my family, Marcus was simply a government consultant.<\/p>\n

I supposedly handled routine administrative work for the Department of Defense.<\/p>\n

The cover story existed for security reasons.<\/p>\n

And on Thanksgiving morning, it was also protecting the people humiliating me.<\/p>\n

They believed Marcus had died leaving behind little more than life insurance and a nice house.<\/p>\n

They didn\u2019t know his final assignment was still classified.<\/p>\n

They didn\u2019t know I remained on active duty.<\/p>\n

Most importantly, they had no idea that my emergency leave had officially ended the previous night.<\/p>\n

An extraction unit was already on its way.<\/p>\n

I looked around the kitchen.<\/p>\n

My father hid behind his newspaper.<\/p>\n
