By that, Fiona meant her three children were sitting inside my house with their mother.<\/p>\n

Her children.<\/p>\n

I looked through the restaurant window. Outside, traffic moved beneath the warm Arizona evening. A couple walked past holding hands. Somewhere near the bar, someone laughed. Across the dining room, a family posed around a birthday cake.<\/p>\n

Normal people having normal evenings.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, my sister expected me to abandon my birthday dinner because preparing food for her own children had somehow become my job.<\/p>\n

For months, I had treated every unreasonable request as though it were temporary.<\/p>\n

One more dinner.<\/p>\n

One more school pickup.<\/p>\n

One more grocery run.<\/p>\n

One more Saturday ruined.<\/p>\n

One more \u201cemergency\u201d created because Fiona had failed to handle something ordinary.<\/p>\n

I kept telling myself I was helping family through a difficult transition.<\/p>\n

Sitting there, I finally understood the truth.<\/p>\n

My kindness was no longer being received as kindness.<\/p>\n

It had become expectation.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re their mother.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her breathing changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know what I\u2019ve been through.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know I\u2019m exhausted.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo am I.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have children.\u201d<\/p>\n

There it was.<\/p>\n

The sentence she had used in a hundred different forms.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t have children, so your time matters less.<\/p>\n

You make good money, so more of it should be available.<\/p>\n

You own a house, so your extra rooms are family property.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re single, so your schedule should bend.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re younger, so you can handle more.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re stable, so everyone else\u2019s instability becomes yours to absorb.<\/p>\n

I lifted my water glass.<\/p>\n

\u201cFiona, I\u2019m eating my birthday dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n

A pause.<\/p>\n
