But every neighbor on the street insisted they had heard absolutely nothing.<\/p>\n

And the strangest part?<\/p>\n

Our babysitter claimed she hadn\u2019t seen anything either.<\/p>\n

My sister had gotten married that Saturday.<\/p>\n

My husband Mark and I left the house around two in the afternoon and didn\u2019t return until just after four the next morning.<\/p>\n

The second our headlights swept across the front yard, Mark stopped the car halfway into the driveway.<\/p>\n

There were plastic cups scattered across the grass.<\/p>\n

Bottles in the flowerbeds.<\/p>\n

Pizza boxes near the front steps.<\/p>\n

Paper plates stretched almost all the way to the fence.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the hell happened here?\u201d Mark whispered.<\/p>\n

Our neighbor\u2019s seventeen-year-old daughter, Chloe, had been babysitting.<\/p>\n

We had known her since she was practically a baby herself.<\/p>\n

She had looked after our six-year-old daughter Mia several times before, and because our son Noah was fourteen, Chloe was mostly there to supervise Mia and make sure nothing ridiculous happened while we were gone.<\/p>\n

I trusted her completely.<\/p>\n

Then I put my key in the front door.<\/p>\n

Before I even turned it, the door swung inward.<\/p>\n

My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n

The hallway looked just as bad as the lawn.<\/p>\n

Cups.<\/p>\n

Plates.<\/p>\n

Someone\u2019s jacket.<\/p>\n

A paper crown from a fast-food restaurant we never visited.<\/p>\n

The mess continued through the kitchen and into the backyard.<\/p>\n

Outside, empty soda bottles and pizza crusts covered the patio.<\/p>\n

A plastic tablecloth hung halfway off the table.<\/p>\n

Then I saw Mia.<\/p>\n

She was asleep on the living room couch, still wearing the clothes she had worn that afternoon.<\/p>\n

Chloe sat in the armchair near the window with her phone facedown beside her.<\/p>\n

She looked exhausted.<\/p>\n

My anger rose instantly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen how did enough trash for forty people end up inside my house?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her voice was calm.<\/p>\n

Too calm.<\/p>\n

I wanted to yell.<\/p>\n

Instead, I told her to go home.<\/p>\n

Chloe picked up her jacket and stopped near the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor what exactly?\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked at me for a moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she walked out.<\/p>\n

That answer stayed with me.<\/p>\n

I checked Mia first.<\/p>\n

She was fine.<\/p>\n

No injuries.<\/p>\n

No sign she had been scared.<\/p>\n

I carried her upstairs and tucked her into bed.<\/p>\n

Then I looked into Noah\u2019s room.<\/p>\n

The lights were off.<\/p>\n

He appeared to be sleeping.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t wake him.<\/p>\n

Mark and I spent almost two hours cleaning the worst of the mess.<\/p>\n

By six-thirty, I gave up.<\/p>\n

I was still wearing the blue dress from the wedding.<\/p>\n

My makeup had smeared beneath my eyes.<\/p>\n

My feet hurt so badly I was barefoot.<\/p>\n

And I was far too angry to sleep.<\/p>\n

So I walked next door.<\/p>\n

Dave, our neighbor, answered holding a mug of coffee.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you hear anything last night?\u201d<\/p>\n

He frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA party.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dave glanced toward our house.<\/p>\n

\u201cCars? People shouting?\u201d<\/p>\n

He shook his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there had been a party, we would\u2019ve heard the car doors at least.\u201d<\/p>\n

That made absolutely no sense.<\/p>\n

His house was only a few yards from ours.<\/p>\n

I asked the woman across the street.<\/p>\n

Nothing.<\/p>\n

I asked the family on the corner.<\/p>\n

Nothing.<\/p>\n

Then I knocked on several more doors.<\/p>\n

Not one neighbor had heard music.<\/p>\n

Not one had heard shouting.<\/p>\n

Nobody remembered cars arriving.<\/p>\n

Forty teenagers do not appear and disappear silently.<\/p>\n

Yet my house clearly said a party had happened.<\/p>\n

The street said otherwise.<\/p>\n

When I returned home, Mark was standing in the kitchen holding the paper crown.<\/p>\n

Then his expression changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe living room camera.\u201d<\/p>\n

I had forgotten about it completely.<\/p>\n

We had installed the camera to check on our dog.<\/p>\n

It sat high on a bookshelf and captured most of the living room and part of the hallway.<\/p>\n

I opened the app.<\/p>\n

We rewound to two in the afternoon.<\/p>\n

At first, everything looked completely normal.<\/p>\n
