When I told my son I was retiring and hoped to stay with him for a while, I expected an awkward conversation about space or money.<\/p>\n

Vanessa put down her fork and looked straight at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re going to live here, you\u2019ll pay two thousand dollars a month. You\u2019ll clean the house, mow both yards, and drive the kids to school. We don\u2019t need a freeloader.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned to my son, Ethan.<\/p>\n

He stared at his plate.<\/p>\n

Then he nodded.<\/p>\n

That hurt more than anything Vanessa said.<\/p>\n

My name is Walter Hayes. I was sixty and had worked for four decades. Ethan assumed I had little money because I still wore flannel shirts and drove an old pickup. He knew I once owned a small grocery store, but he never asked what happened after that.<\/p>\n

I never told him. I wanted my son to build his own life without waiting for mine.<\/p>\n

So I said, \u201cAll right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Three days later, I moved into the smallest bedroom. Vanessa taped a list of rules to the door: wake at five, clean before breakfast, buy my own food, maintain the lawn, and pick up the children every afternoon.<\/p>\n

I folded the page and kept it.<\/p>\n

The work was exhausting, but my grandchildren made it bearable. Noah was nine and loved soccer. Emma was seven and followed me everywhere.<\/p>\n

One evening, I baked an apple pie using my mother\u2019s recipe. Vanessa found it the next morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cI made it for the kids,\u201d I explained.<\/p>\n

She threw the entire pie into the trash.<\/p>\n

Noah saw it happen.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrandpa, was that yours?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s okay,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Later, our neighbor Margaret told me her grandson had tasted a slice.<\/p>\n
