Vanessa kept treating me like hired help.<\/p>\n

Before a barbecue, she made me move my old pickup because it \u201cruined the look.\u201d Yet Ethan\u2019s supervisor later admired the truck and told him I knew more about engines than most mechanics.<\/p>\n

Then Noah\u2019s soccer team couldn\u2019t afford training equipment. Using tubing, netting, and hardware from one of my warehouses, I built portable goals and a rebound net.<\/p>\n

Coach Ramirez stared at them.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere did you learn to build like this?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA long time ago, in a very small store.\u201d<\/p>\n

Noah hugged me tightly.<\/p>\n

That night, I began recording every hour Vanessa made me work.<\/p>\n

Then came the storm.<\/p>\n

Traffic was terrible, and I returned from picking up the children late. Rain had blown under the front door.<\/p>\n

Vanessa saw the wet floor.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were supposed to clean this before pickup.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was an accident on the freeway.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t need excuses.\u201d<\/p>\n

She opened the front door.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can come back inside when you\u2019ve handled it properly.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at Ethan.<\/p>\n

He stood there and said nothing.<\/p>\n

Again.<\/p>\n

So I walked outside.<\/p>\n

Vanessa locked the door behind me.<\/p>\n

I spent the night on the porch while rain hammered the street. Around eleven, Noah opened his bedroom window.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrandpa?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n

His blue soccer blanket came flying down. I wrapped it around my shoulders.<\/p>\n

That small act of love gave me more warmth than the house behind me.<\/p>\n

The next morning, a neighbor found me outside and confronted Ethan. For the first time, my son looked ashamed.<\/p>\n

That evening, I totaled the hours in my notebook. The work Vanessa demanded was worth more than twice the rent she wanted.<\/p>\n

The next morning, I placed two thousand dollars on the counter.<\/p>\n

Vanessa smiled.<\/p>\n

Then I opened the notebook.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou demanded rent. But after subtracting it from what my labor is worth, this household still owes me money.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her smile disappeared.<\/p>\n

\u201cStarting today, I\u2019m done working for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

That afternoon, an email arrived:<\/p>\n

**Attendance requested: Walter Hayes, Founder and Chairman.**<\/p>\n

I called my attorney.<\/p>\n
