I climbed onto the vanity, removed the grille, and froze.

Behind the slats, a tiny black lens stared directly at me.

My mother-in-law, Diane Mercer, had insisted on “helping” when my husband Nathan and I renovated our house outside Raleigh.

She chose the contractor.

She supervised the wiring.

And she kept a spare key “for emergencies.”

Whenever I complained that Diane entered our house without knocking, Nathan laughed it off.

“Mom’s nosy, Elena. She isn’t dangerous.”

I didn’t call him.

Instead, I photographed the camera exactly where I found it, recorded its serial number, then removed it using gloves.

I had spent nine years conducting digital-forensics investigations for hospitals.

Whoever installed the device had hidden it carefully.

But they had configured it badly.

The camera was connected to our guest Wi-Fi network and uploading footage to a private cloud account.

I quietly purchased the same model and replaced it.

My camera recorded nothing from inside the bathroom. It faced only the dark cavity behind the vent.

But it preserved every login attempt, command, and destination address.

I sealed the original camera inside an evidence bag and called Maya Chen, an attorney who specialized in privacy crimes.

By midnight, we knew the feed had been accessed from two devices.

Diane’s tablet.

And Nathan’s laptop.

The next afternoon, Diane arrived carrying lemon bars and wearing her usual pleasant smile.

“You look tired,” she said, examining my face. “Are you taking something?”

“Just working late.”

Her eyes flicked briefly toward the hallway.

That one glance told me something important.

The camera wasn’t there simply because she wanted to spy on me.

She expected it to capture something specific.

For six nights, my replacement camera logged repeated attempts to access the bathroom feed.

All they saw was darkness.

On the seventh day, another storage folder suddenly synchronized with the same account.

It contained recordings from Diane’s dining room.

In one clip, Nathan sat across from his mother.

A forged deed lay between them.

And they kept talking about my late father’s lake house.

“Once everyone sees the bathroom video,” Diane said, “they’ll believe she’s unstable. You file for emergency control of the assets, and the house is ours before she understands what happened.”

Nathan lifted his glass.

“At the reunion. Big audience, no escape.”

I listened without moving.

Another recording explained why Nathan had recently pressured me to move my father’s trust documents into the safe at our house.

Diane planned to replace the original deed with their fake one after publicly humiliating me.

They had mistaken my silence for confusion.

And my loyalty for weakness.

I copied every file, documented its checksum, and stored the evidence in a safe-deposit box neither of them knew existed.

I listened to the recordings twice.

By the second time, my marriage felt like ice.

Then an invitation arrived from Diane.

***FAMILY REUNION—SATURDAY NIGHT.***

I clicked Accept.

I found the camera because one stubborn drop of steam wouldn’t disappear from the bathroom vent. I climbed onto the vanity, removed the grille, and froze.
