The kitchen was still dark that Monday morning when I poured my first cup of coffee. The refrigerator hummed softly, and Nathan\u2019s slow breathing drifted from the bedroom down the hall.<\/p>\n

Somehow, that hum was worse than an actual criticism.<\/p>\n

Her approval mattered to me more than I liked admitting.<\/p>\n

At Thanksgiving the previous year, she\u2019d taken one bite of my roast, carefully placed her fork down, and asked whether I\u2019d used sea salt or \u201cthe regular kind.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe regular kind, Patricia,\u201d I\u2019d said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMm. That explains it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nathan squeezed my knee beneath the table but didn\u2019t argue with her.<\/p>\n

He rarely did.<\/p>\n

He once told me he\u2019d stopped trying to correct his mother sometime around the age of twelve.<\/p>\n

I kept telling myself her comments didn\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n

Yet whenever Patricia announced a visit, I cleaned twice as much as usual.<\/p>\n

There was one thing about her that had always seemed strange.<\/p>\n

In eight years, she\u2019d never invited us to her home.<\/p>\n

Not once.<\/p>\n

One afternoon, I\u2019d offered to carry her groceries inside. Patricia immediately pulled the bag away and told me to wait in the car.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

As she turned, I noticed a sour smell clinging to her coat and a yellow stain she\u2019d quickly covered with her hand.<\/p>\n

A few mornings later, I mentioned it to Nathan.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s so weird,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat your mother never has us over. She\u2019s always here, checking my baseboards, but she never lets us step inside her place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nathan paused with one shoe only half tied.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe likes being the guest,\u201d he finally said. \u201cShe likes running the show.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWas she always like this?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah. When I was a kid, she\u2019d clean only the living room before guests came and shut every other door.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you\u2019ve inherited the family hospitality.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he studied my face.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou okay? You seem off.\u201d<\/p>\n

I hadn\u2019t slept much that night.<\/p>\n

Around midnight, I\u2019d started coughing. By morning, every breath hurt and chills were running through my body.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nathan stood and crossed the kitchen.<\/p>\n

\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

He had already checked my temperature twice during the night.<\/p>\n

The most recent reading had been 102.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re staying in bed today,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll be fine. Go to work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cClaire, you\u2019re shaking. Sit down.\u201d<\/p>\n

I sat mostly because the room had started tilting around me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll call in,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ll stay.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. Go to work. I\u2019ll sleep it off.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNathan, go. I promise I\u2019ll rest.\u201d<\/p>\n

He hesitated before kissing my forehead and leaving.<\/p>\n

By eleven, my fever was still around 102.<\/p>\n

Nathan had called twice to make sure I hadn\u2019t gotten out of bed, and eventually I managed to fall asleep.<\/p>\n

I was drifting in and out when, at 11:30, the bedroom door flew open hard enough to strike the wall.<\/p>\n

Patricia stood there holding our spare emergency key between two fingers like she\u2019d won something.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlmost NOON,\u201d she announced, \u201cand here you are, still tucked in like a princess.\u201d<\/p>\n

I tried to sit up.<\/p>\n

My arms trembled.<\/p>\n

\u201cPatricia, I\u2019m sick.\u201d<\/p>\n

She walked farther into the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all get sick, Claire. My generation got up. We took care of our husbands.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a fever of a hundred and two.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her gaze moved across the tissues, medicine, and water beside the bed.<\/p>\n
