The cake nearly fell from my hands, but one of Tyler\u2019s coworkers caught it.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow badly is he hurt?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

Captain Reyes hesitated.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was conscious when they transported him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat isn\u2019t an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n

There had been a warehouse fire that morning. Tyler and two other firefighters were inside when part of the structure collapsed. Everyone made it out, but Tyler took the worst of the impact.<\/p>\n

I could barely process the words.<\/p>\n

Tyler had called me that morning.<\/p>\n

He had sounded completely normal.<\/p>\n

He had smiled in our kitchen, told me not to do anything crazy, and said he loved me.<\/p>\n

Now those ordinary words felt terrifyingly important.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy didn\u2019t anyone call me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe tried,\u201d Reyes said.<\/p>\n

I pulled out my phone.<\/p>\n

No missed calls.<\/p>\n

No messages.<\/p>\n

Nothing.<\/p>\n

Reyes checked Tyler\u2019s emergency contact information and went quiet.<\/p>\n

The station still had my old phone number, one I had changed almost two years earlier.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reyes offered to drive me, but I refused.<\/p>\n

I untied the birthday balloons from my wrist and left them beside the cake.<\/p>\n

On the way to the hospital, I repeated the same words.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s alive.<\/p>\n

When I reached Tyler\u2019s room, my legs nearly gave out.<\/p>\n

His left arm was strapped against his body. A bandage covered part of his head, and bruises spread across one side of his face.<\/p>\n

But he was awake.<\/p>\n

He looked at me and managed a crooked smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey.\u201d<\/p>\n

For a few seconds, I couldn\u2019t speak.<\/p>\n

Then fear turned into anger.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou idiot.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFair.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou absolute idiot.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

I kissed his forehead and started crying.<\/p>\n

Tyler took my hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m okay.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, you\u2019re not.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI will be.\u201d<\/p>\n

That answer I could accept.<\/p>\n

The doctors said he had a fractured shoulder, three cracked ribs, and a concussion. They wanted to keep him overnight.<\/p>\n

It could have been much worse.<\/p>\n

Later, Tyler asked, \u201cHow did you know I was here?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI went to the station.\u201d<\/p>\n

His eyes closed.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh no.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWith balloons.\u201d<\/p>\n

He groaned.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd cake.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAmanda.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour favorite one.\u201d<\/p>\n

He laughed, then winced.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t make me laugh.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t deserve cake.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s cruel.\u201d<\/p>\n

I almost smiled.<\/p>\n

Then I remembered Captain Reyes\u2019s first words.<\/p>\n

*You don\u2019t know yet?*<\/p>\n

\u201cTyler, why did Reyes act like there was something else I should know?\u201d<\/p>\n

His expression changed.<\/p>\n

Not fear.<\/p>\n
