Tyler looked down at our hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe warehouse wasn\u2019t empty.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know. Reyes said you got everyone out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

A chill ran through me.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a little girl trapped upstairs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The floor had already become unstable. Captain Reyes had ordered everyone to evacuate.<\/p>\n

Then Tyler heard a child crying.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went back.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

He had disobeyed an evacuation order and gone back inside a collapsing warehouse for a child he had never met.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you get her?\u201d<\/p>\n

His eyes filled.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n

I covered my mouth.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs she okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot a scratch.\u201d<\/p>\n

My anger broke apart.<\/p>\n

Part of me wanted to yell at him for risking his life.<\/p>\n

Another part wanted to hold him and never let go.<\/p>\n

Then he squeezed my hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not what Reyes thought you knew.\u201d<\/p>\n

I froze.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

Tyler took a breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe department nominated me for the Medal of Valor this afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd apparently it was approved.\u201d<\/p>\n

For several seconds, I said nothing.<\/p>\n

Then I laughed through my tears.<\/p>\n

I had gone to the station thinking I was going to surprise my husband for his birthday.<\/p>\n

Instead, I discovered that he had been hospitalized, had risked his life to save a child, and had been chosen to receive one of the department\u2019s highest honors.<\/p>\n

And somehow, Tyler still looked embarrassed by the attention.<\/p>\n

I leaned closer.<\/p>\n

He smiled.<\/p>\n

The next morning, someone knocked on Tyler\u2019s hospital room door.<\/p>\n

Captain Reyes walked in carrying the birthday cake I had abandoned at the station.<\/p>\n

Behind him came the rest of Tyler\u2019s crew.<\/p>\n

And behind them floated the balloons.<\/p>\n

The same balloons that had looked painfully out of place the day before.<\/p>\n

This time, everyone was smiling.<\/p>\n

One firefighter set down the cake while another tied the balloons near Tyler\u2019s bed.<\/p>\n

Captain Reyes shook his head.<\/p>\n

Everyone laughed.<\/p>\n

I stood beside the bed, watching the people who had avoided my eyes the previous day fill the room with jokes again.<\/p>\n

The birthday surprise I planned never happened the way I imagined.<\/p>\n
