\u201cIt cannot wait.\u201d<\/p>\n

She placed the folder in front of him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour employment has been terminated for cause, effective 9:42 p.m.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vanessa went pale.<\/p>\n

Grant didn\u2019t touch the folder.<\/p>\n

Instead, he looked at me and gave a sharp laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy wife doesn\u2019t control the board.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour wife controls the voting trust,\u201d Margaret replied. \u201cAnd the independent directors voted unanimously after reviewing the forensic report.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grant\u2019s mother stood.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat company belongs to our family.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cIt belongs to mine. You borrowed the name by marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside, tow lights flashed against the ballroom windows.<\/p>\n

Grant\u2019s brother rushed toward the entrance and returned shouting that the Porsche was already being loaded.<\/p>\n

His mother demanded the Bentley keys from the valet, only to learn her authorization had been canceled.<\/p>\n

Around us, champagne glasses lowered while phones came up.<\/p>\n

Grant finally opened the folder.<\/p>\n

The forensic report traced **$2.8 million** in false consulting invoices to an LLC controlled by Vanessa.<\/p>\n

It documented private flights disguised as property inspections, renovations to a Manhattan apartment, and jewelry purchased on a company card.<\/p>\n

Grant\u2019s signature appeared beside every approval.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is fabricated,\u201d Vanessa whispered.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen you can explain your bank records to the auditors,\u201d Margaret said.<\/p>\n

Grant spun toward her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou said the LLC was insulated.\u201d<\/p>\n

That sentence did more damage than the report.<\/p>\n

Half the ballroom heard him.<\/p>\n

I pulled away.<\/p>\n

\u201cSecurity has the banquet footage. So does counsel.\u201d<\/p>\n

A dark mark began forming beneath his fingers.<\/p>\n

Several guests noticed.<\/p>\n

The laughter was gone now.<\/p>\n

All that remained was the quiet movement of people realizing they might become witnesses.<\/p>\n

Grant\u2019s expression shifted.<\/p>\n

For years, he had relied on my unwillingness to expose private humiliation publicly.<\/p>\n

He knew about our old prenuptial agreement, but apparently had never studied its misconduct clause.<\/p>\n

Proven diversion of company assets ended his claim to appreciation in the family trust and required him to cover legal costs.<\/p>\n

He had also forgotten that security cameras at the estate recorded meetings in his home office\u2014including two conversations with Vanessa about moving money before the next audit.<\/p>\n

His mother slapped her palm against the table.<\/p>\n
