By the twins\u2019 first birthday, I had learned how to function around the grief.<\/p>\n

I planned a small party at home with balloons, cake, relatives, friends, and neighbors.<\/p>\n

Mia and Owen covered themselves in frosting while everyone laughed.<\/p>\n

For a while, it felt like a normal first birthday.<\/p>\n

But every celebration after Daniel\u2019s death contained another version in my imagination.<\/p>\n

The version where he was still there.<\/p>\n

After the guests left, I started cleaning.<\/p>\n

Carol stopped me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need to get something.\u201d<\/p>\n

She went outside and returned carrying a large box.<\/p>\n

The moment I saw the handwriting on the lid, I froze.<\/p>\n

I reached for the latch.<\/p>\n

Carol stopped me.<\/p>\n

Her expression frightened me.<\/p>\n

She lowered herself into a chair.<\/p>\n

Then she told me the truth.<\/p>\n

Daniel had known he was seriously ill.<\/p>\n

The papers I had seen in his car weren\u2019t work documents.<\/p>\n

They were medical results.<\/p>\n

He had known before the twins were born.<\/p>\n

I stared at Carol.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n

She nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMarch.\u201d<\/p>\n

My chair scraped against the floor as I stood.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou knew all that time?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe asked me not to tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n

My anger came instantly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was his wife!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI deserved to know!\u201d<\/p>\n

Carol didn\u2019t defend herself.<\/p>\n

She explained that Daniel had met her at a diner after receiving his results.<\/p>\n

He made her promise not to tell me.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said you deserved those months to be happy about the babies without spending every day afraid of losing him.\u201d<\/p>\n

My hands shook.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe had no right to decide that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re right.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd neither did you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re right.\u201d<\/p>\n

That answer stopped me.<\/p>\n

Carol wasn\u2019t asking to be forgiven.<\/p>\n

She was simply admitting what she had done.<\/p>\n

I looked back at the box.<\/p>\n

However angry I was, I needed to know what Daniel had left behind.<\/p>\n

I opened it.<\/p>\n

Inside were two smaller boxes and an envelope with my name.<\/p>\n

The first box contained Daniel\u2019s watch.<\/p>\n

A note read:<\/p>\n

**For our son.**<\/p>\n

The second held a necklace that had belonged to his grandmother.<\/p>\n

**For our daughter.**<\/p>\n

Beneath them were twelve sealed envelopes.<\/p>\n

I picked them up one by one.<\/p>\n

**For your first day of school.**<\/p>\n

**For when you turn sixteen.**<\/p>\n

**For graduation.**<\/p>\n

**For the day you fall in love.**<\/p>\n

Then I found the envelope that broke me.<\/p>\n

**For the day you need your dad and I\u2019m not there.**<\/p>\n

I bent over the table and cried.<\/p>\n

Daniel had known he might never see any of those days.<\/p>\n

While I had been decorating the nursery and complaining about swollen ankles, he had been preparing pieces of himself for a future he knew he might never share.<\/p>\n
