The moment the door closed, every fear I had fought since chemotherapy came rushing back.<\/p>\n

Of course Jeffrey had stayed while I was sick. What kind of husband leaves his wife while she is fighting cancer?<\/p>\n

But now I was recovering.<\/p>\n

Maybe he no longer had to pretend.<\/p>\n

I sat on the edge of the huge bed and thought about my short hair, the scars, the loose skin, and the body I still struggled to recognize. Maybe the months of being my caregiver had destroyed whatever romantic feelings Jeffrey once had for me.<\/p>\n

Around nine, he knocked on my door.<\/p>\n

\u201cWant to get dinner?\u201d<\/p>\n

When I opened it, he was wearing another oversized shirt buttoned high around his neck.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou look beautiful,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo I?\u201d<\/p>\n

We ate downstairs, but Jeffrey talked about everything except the second hotel room.<\/p>\n

By the time dessert arrived, I couldn\u2019t stand pretending.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m tired. I\u2019m going upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll walk with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

I returned alone, crawled beneath the blanket, and cried into the pillow.<\/p>\n

I became convinced our marriage was ending.<\/p>\n

At 11:30, someone knocked.<\/p>\n

Jeffrey stood outside with red eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor what? Finally admitting you can\u2019t stand looking at me?\u201d<\/p>\n

His expression changed instantly.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust tell me the truth. I saw your face when you looked at that bed. I know I\u2019m not the woman you married anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jeffrey stepped inside and quietly locked the door behind him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t get another room because I didn\u2019t want to be with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen why? Is it because I lost my hair? Because of the scars?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n

His voice shook.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease stop talking about yourself like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen explain it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stood silently for several seconds.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s something I\u2019ve been hiding from you since your third round of chemo.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

Jeffrey slowly began unbuttoning his shirt.<\/p>\n

The first button.<\/p>\n

Then the second.<\/p>\n

His fingers were trembling.<\/p>\n

\u201cJeffrey, you\u2019re frightening me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJust let me do this. If I stop now, I won\u2019t tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n

When he finally opened the shirt, I gasped.<\/p>\n

Dark red lines wrapped around his ribs and stomach, and there were bruised-looking marks across his skin.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re hurt!\u201d<\/p>\n

I reached toward him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n

He gently caught my hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not injured the way you think.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen what caused that?\u201d<\/p>\n

For a long moment, he seemed too embarrassed to answer.<\/p>\n

Finally, he reached into his suitcase and pulled out a black compression garment.<\/p>\n

\u201cMen\u2019s shapewear.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are you wearing that?\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked away.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I didn\u2019t want you to see what happened to me while you were sick.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jeffrey sat heavily on the edge of the bed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you got sick, I stopped taking care of myself. I barely slept. I quit exercising. Sometimes I forgot to eat. Other times I ate everything I could find because it was the only thing that calmed me down.\u201d<\/p>\n

He rubbed both hands over his face.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve gained almost sixty pounds since your diagnosis.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why you\u2019ve been wearing those huge shirts?\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd why you change in the bathroom?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you told me we were coming here, I panicked. I remembered our honeymoon photographs and what I looked like twenty years ago. I bought that compression thing because I thought if I wore it all weekend, maybe you wouldn\u2019t notice how much I\u2019d changed.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at the angry marks around his waist.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you can\u2019t sleep in it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

He let out a broken laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can barely breathe wearing it. I couldn\u2019t lie beside you all night knowing you might feel what was underneath. So I booked another room.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him in disbelief.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me understand this. You rented another hotel room because you thought you were too heavy to sleep next to your wife?\u201d<\/p>\n

He lowered his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause you were afraid I wouldn\u2019t find you attractive anymore?\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded.<\/p>\n

And suddenly, the absurd truth hit me.<\/p>\n
