For years, I believed my husband\u2019s family had decided that my children and I simply didn\u2019t belong. I accepted every excuse Nathan gave me because keeping the peace seemed easier than demanding an answer. Then, during the eleventh summer he left us behind, one photograph forced my fifteen-year-old daughter to ask the question I had spent years avoiding.<\/p>\n

The first summer Nathan went on his family beach vacation without us, Sophie was four. She kept a little pink plastic beach shovel beside her bed because her father had promised she could use it \u201cnext time.\u201d There was never a next time. By the time Sophie was fifteen and her younger brother Caleb was eleven, both children had learned not to sound hopeful when Nathan started packing.<\/p>\n

That afternoon, Sophie stood in the hallway while Nathan folded linen shirts into his suitcase.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs Ava going?\u201d<\/p>\n

Nathan\u2019s hands paused. Ava was his daughter from his first marriage to Aurora. I had always known about both of them, although Nathan claimed his relationship with Aurora was tense and limited to necessary conversations about their daughter.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t know whether your own daughter is going?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cAurora and I barely talk unless it involves family logistics.\u201d<\/p>\n

Caleb looked up at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWill we ever get to go?\u201d<\/p>\n

Nathan gave him the gentle smile he always used when he wanted a difficult conversation to disappear.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is just how my family does vacations, buddy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are your family too, Nathan.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, actually, I don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

He zipped his suitcase.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne summer might be tradition. Eleven summers is a decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nathan\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not doing this today.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou never do it any day.\u201d<\/p>\n

He kissed Sophie\u2019s forehead, ruffled Caleb\u2019s hair, picked up his suitcase, and left. What hurt most wasn\u2019t simply that he excluded us. It was that he had somehow taught our children to feel ashamed for being hurt by it.<\/p>\n

After the door closed, Caleb shrugged.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s okay, Mom. I didn\u2019t really think he\u2019d take us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sophie stared at the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cI used to think if I stopped asking, maybe it wouldn\u2019t hurt anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two hours later, she entered the kitchen holding her phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first beach photo had already been posted. Nathan\u2019s entire family stood beneath a huge blue umbrella wearing matching shirts. His parents, siblings, cousins\u2014and right in the middle were Aurora, Ava, and Nathan.<\/p>\n

Ava wasn\u2019t the problem. She deserved her father and grandparents as much as anyone. The problem was that my children had been told for eleven years that they weren\u2019t included because of \u201cfamily tradition,\u201d while Nathan smiled in a photograph with the family he claimed was too complicated to mix with ours.<\/p>\n

Sophie stared at the screen.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo Ava counts, but we don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her voice cracked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know this isn\u2019t Ava\u2019s fault. I just want to know what Caleb and I did wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was the moment I stopped protecting Nathan\u2019s version of the story. I picked up my phone and called his mother, Linda.<\/p>\n

\u201cTell me the truth. Why have my children never been invited?\u201d<\/p>\n

Linda went quiet.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor eleven summers, Nathan told me this was your tradition. He said spouses and younger children weren\u2019t included. Sophie and Caleb just saw the pictures.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was a long silence.<\/p>\n

Then Linda whispered:<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNathan told us you didn\u2019t want to come.\u201d<\/p>\n

My entire kitchen seemed to tilt.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said you were uncomfortable being around Aurora and Ava. He told us you didn\u2019t want Sophie and Caleb mixed into his first family.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI never said that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe told us he was respecting your boundaries.\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed once, but there was nothing funny about it.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy daughter slept beside a plastic beach shovel when she was four because Nathan promised she could go next year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Linda made a broken sound.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe thought this was your decision, Claire. I swear we love Sophie and Caleb.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was never my decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

Linda finally said the words that changed everything.<\/p>\n

\u201cBring the children here. Come to the beach house. This needs to be discussed face-to-face.\u201d<\/p>\n

I hung up and turned toward Sophie and Caleb.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour grandparents thought we didn\u2019t want to come.\u201d<\/p>\n

Caleb frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sophie folded her arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t even care about the beach anymore. I just wanted Dad to stop lying about why we weren\u2019t there.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was when I knew Nathan wasn\u2019t getting another quiet summer.<\/p>\n

\u201cPack an overnight bag.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sophie blinked.<\/p>\n
