\u201cI want to explain.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stepped aside.<\/p>\n

He entered my living room but refused to sit. Instead, he twisted his baseball cap between his hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe man driving the SUV was my dad.\u201d<\/p>\n

I waited.<\/p>\n

\u201cI live with my mom. The court says I have to stay with him every other weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo the expensive clothes?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy grandfather built the workbench inside. He taught me to fix bikes there. I learned how to ride on that concrete floor. When it rained, we\u2019d sit inside and listen to the water hitting the roof.\u201d<\/p>\n

His voice cracked.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter Grandpa died, everything fell apart. Mom couldn\u2019t keep up with the mortgage. We lost the house.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got a feeling you\u2019re the only person who actually cares whether every row is straight.\u201d<\/p>\n

He smiled and headed toward the door, but stopped before reaching it.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Rick?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf my dad wanted to see the garage\u2026 would you let him?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI finally told him why I keep coming here.\u201d<\/p>\n

I waited.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe didn\u2019t know this house meant more to me than everything he\u2019s ever bought.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chase looked down.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he wants to understand.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf he really wants to understand, he can come.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over the next month, our Saturday routine returned. After Chase finished mowing, we\u2019d sit beside the garage drinking cold sodas while he told me stories about his grandfather\u2014how he\u2019d repaired bicycles for neighborhood kids, how they built birdhouses every Christmas, and how he insisted every scratch on the garage floor had its own story.<\/p>\n
