A few days later, I decided it was finally time to clean the garage.<\/p>\n

Boxes left behind by the previous owner still lined one wall, cobwebs stretched across the rafters, and years of dust covered the floor.<\/p>\n

I was sweeping behind an old stack of storage bins when my broom hit something on the wall.<\/p>\n

At first, I thought they were scratches.<\/p>\n

Then I looked closer.<\/p>\n

They were pencil marks.<\/p>\n

Names.<\/p>\n

Dates.<\/p>\n

Heights.<\/p>\n

CHASE \u2014 AGE 8.<\/p>\n

CHASE \u2014 AGE 10.<\/p>\n

CHASE \u2014 AGE 12.<\/p>\n

Higher up were older marks belonging to his mother.<\/p>\n

And above all of them was another name.<\/p>\n

GRANDPA.<\/p>\n

I crouched there staring at an entire family\u2019s history written directly onto the garage wall.<\/p>\n

Then, as I moved another storage bin, something slid out and landed on the concrete.<\/p>\n

A small framed photograph.<\/p>\n

The glass was cracked, but the picture itself was still clear.<\/p>\n

An older man stood beside a young boy holding a bicycle.<\/p>\n

I recognized the boy instantly.<\/p>\n

Chase.<\/p>\n

And suddenly, I knew why his face had seemed familiar from the first day we\u2019d met.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d seen that photograph before.<\/p>\n

It had been hanging in the hallway during the open house when I first toured the property. By the time I moved in, the realtor had removed it along with everything else.<\/p>\n

The following Saturday, Chase arrived with his mower.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t explain anything.<\/p>\n

I simply opened the garage door.<\/p>\n

Then he walked toward the wall and gently traced one of the pencil marks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought these were gone too.\u201d<\/p>\n

His eyes filled.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrandpa always joked that one day we\u2019d need a taller wall.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked toward the paint cans in the corner.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d planned to repaint the garage that weekend.<\/p>\n

The roller was already sitting beside them.<\/p>\n

Instead, I picked it up, carried it back to the shelf, and closed the paint can.<\/p>\n

Chase looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not painting over these.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have to keep them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at the names and dates covering the wall.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut some things deserve to stay exactly where they are.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chase nodded slowly.<\/p>\n

Then we stood together in that old garage, looking at the pencil marks his family had left behind.<\/p>\n

Technically, the house belonged to me now.<\/p>\n

The garage belonged to me.<\/p>\n

The lawn he\u2019d been mowing every Saturday belonged to me.<\/p>\n

But standing there beside Chase, I finally understood something.<\/p>\n

He had never been coming back because he wanted my property.<\/p>\n

He hadn\u2019t been trying to steal anything.<\/p>\n

He had simply been searching for proof that the happiest part of his childhood still existed somewhere.<\/p>\n

A workbench built by his grandfather.<\/p>\n

A concrete floor where he\u2019d learned to ride a bicycle.<\/p>\n

A wall that still remembered how tall he\u2019d been at eight, ten, and twelve.<\/p>\n

And a cracked photograph of a man he\u2019d loved.<\/p>\n

Over time, even his father began showing up more often. I didn\u2019t know whether Christian could repair every mistake he\u2019d made, and neither did Chase. But at least he\u2019d finally stopped trying to replace memories with expensive things and started making the effort to be present.<\/p>\n

As for Chase, he continued mowing my lawn every Saturday.<\/p>\n

And I continued paying him.<\/p>\n

Not because he needed an excuse to return anymore.<\/p>\n

But because the arrangement had become ours.<\/p>\n

Sometimes after he finished, we\u2019d sit outside the garage with cold drinks. Sometimes Christian joined him. Other times Chase simply stood inside for a few quiet minutes, looking at the old workbench or tracing the pencil marks on the wall.<\/p>\n

I never repainted them.<\/p>\n

Houses don\u2019t actually remember the families who lived inside them.<\/p>\n

Walls don\u2019t miss people.<\/p>\n

Garages don\u2019t grieve when children grow up and leave.<\/p>\n

But sometimes a home holds onto evidence that someone was loved there.<\/p>\n

A worn workbench.<\/p>\n
