Three weeks after I gave birth to triplets, my mother-in-law arrived at our house carrying an enormous present wrapped in shiny silver paper. For one hopeful second, I thought Patricia had actually brought something for me. Maybe a comfortable robe. Maybe something sentimental. Maybe just one small reminder that beneath the bottles, diapers, laundry, and three newborns, I still existed.<\/p>\n

Then Daniel tore away the wrapping.<\/p>\n

It was a full-length mirror.<\/p>\n

Patricia stood proudly beside it as if she\u2019d just presented me with diamonds.<\/p>\n

\u201cPut it somewhere you\u2019ll see yourself every morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

Three bassinets occupied most of our living room. Two babies were sleeping, while the third was making those tiny restless noises that usually meant I had less than a minute before the entire room erupted. I stood there wearing maternity leggings and a cardigan I\u2019d already worn twice that week, staring at a reflection I had been doing my best not to examine too closely.<\/p>\n

Patricia\u2019s eyes traveled slowly down my body.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019ll motivate you to get back in shape faster for my son.\u201d<\/p>\n

Without thinking, I pulled the cardigan tighter across my stomach.<\/p>\n

Daniel stopped removing the remaining wrapping paper.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did you just say, Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia waved him off.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, don\u2019t start.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she looked straight at me again.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have three children now, Penny, but you\u2019re still Daniel\u2019s wife. He shouldn\u2019t have to feel embarrassed standing beside you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nobody spoke. One of the babies stirred in her bassinet, but Patricia continued as though she\u2019d merely offered ordinary advice.<\/p>\n

\u201cMotivation works best when you can see the whole picture. That\u2019s why I bought a full-length mirror.\u201d<\/p>\n

My face burned.<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, Penny, don\u2019t look so hurt. Sometimes women need a little push.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then Daniel chuckled.<\/p>\n

For one awful second, my heart dropped. I couldn\u2019t even bring myself to look at him. Patricia, however, immediately smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cSee? At least my son understands what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n

When I finally turned toward him, Daniel wasn\u2019t looking at me at all. He was staring directly at his mother.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know what, Mom? Your timing is actually perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia\u2019s smile weakened.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got something for you too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her expression immediately brightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou bought me a present?\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel gave her a strange smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou could call it that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he disappeared down the hallway.<\/p>\n

I remained beside that mirror wishing I could disappear with him.<\/p>\n

Three weeks earlier, the woman in that reflection had done something I still couldn\u2019t fully comprehend: she\u2019d brought three babies into the world. Since then, our lives no longer followed clocks. They followed bottles, diapers, crying, feeding, sleeping, and then the same cycle all over again. That morning alone, I\u2019d reheated one cup of coffee three times and still hadn\u2019t managed to finish it. At lunch, I\u2019d eaten half a sandwich while standing because one daughter had finally fallen asleep against my shoulder and I was afraid sitting down would wake her.<\/p>\n

The night before, I\u2019d slept exactly one hour and forty-seven minutes before someone needed me again. I knew because at 2:13 a.m., I\u2019d found myself sitting on the edge of our bed crying quietly while struggling with my nursing bra.<\/p>\n

Daniel had woken immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cPenny?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re crying.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCrying doesn\u2019t technically mean I\u2019m not fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

He sat up and reached for the baby in my arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cGive her to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have work tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you have organs that are probably still trying to remember where they\u2019re supposed to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed despite myself and let him take her. Looking down at my stomach, I admitted something I\u2019d been thinking for days.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hate that none of my clothes fit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel glanced at my maternity leggings.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose fit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re maternity clothes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPenny, you grew three human beings. Those leggings can stay as long as they want.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was Daniel. He rarely delivered grand speeches. He simply had a way of making things sound normal when I desperately needed them to feel normal.<\/p>\n

Still, there were private moments when fear crept in. Would he eventually notice how different I looked? Would he one day glance at me and quietly miss the woman whose old jeans were still hanging untouched in our closet?<\/p>\n

I\u2019d never asked him.<\/p>\n

Now Patricia had taken that private insecurity and placed it in the middle of our living room for everyone to see.<\/p>\n

One baby started fussing, and Patricia bent over the bassinet.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrandma\u2019s here, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then, without even looking at me, she added:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should really start walking every day, Penny. Even twenty minutes would help.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy doctor hasn\u2019t cleared me for exercise yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

She shrugged.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoctors are far too cautious these days.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel\u2019s voice came from the hallway.<\/p>\n

Patricia straightened.<\/p>\n

Then she saw what he was carrying.<\/p>\n

Every trace of confidence disappeared from her face.<\/p>\n

It was an old peach-colored robe. Nothing about it looked expensive. The fabric was faded and thin, there was a pale bleach stain near the bottom, one belt loop was missing, and one pocket was stretched so badly that it sagged lower than the other.<\/p>\n

Patricia took a step backward.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the hell is that?\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel stopped beside the mirror.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou recognize it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDaniel, where did you find that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStorage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou went through those boxes?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re my boxes, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI gave them to you years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia stared at the robe as though Daniel had carried a ghost into the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrow it away.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel raised an eyebrow.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause it\u2019s garbage.\u201d<\/p>\n

He rubbed his thumb across the stretched pocket.<\/p>\n

\u201cFunny. Dad didn\u2019t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia froze.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour father isn\u2019t here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. But apparently he remembered some things better than you do.\u201d<\/p>\n

She crossed her arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have no idea what you\u2019re trying to prove.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel held the robe toward her.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince we\u2019re giving people things they desperately need today, I thought you might need your memory back.\u201d<\/p>\n
