The children were Mia, twelve, and Ben, nine.<\/p>\n

Their mother, Laura, had moved next door two years earlier with her husband, Rick.<\/p>\n

Rick wasn\u2019t their biological father, but everyone in the neighborhood saw him as a friendly, successful family man.<\/p>\n

He installed home-security systems.<\/p>\n

Alarms.<\/p>\n

Smart locks.<\/p>\n

He knew police officers and business owners all over the county.<\/p>\n

He smiled at block parties.<\/p>\n

Helped at school fundraisers.<\/p>\n

Whenever Laura spoke, he often placed a hand against the back of her neck.<\/p>\n

I used to think it looked strangely possessive.<\/p>\n

I never imagined how right that instinct was.<\/p>\n

After finding the note, I carried the flash drive inside and plugged it into an old laptop.<\/p>\n

Seven folders appeared.<\/p>\n

I opened the final folder.<\/p>\n

Mia appeared on-screen sitting inside what looked like her closet.<\/p>\n

Ben was beside her.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re watching this,\u201d she whispered, \u201ceither Rick found out or Mom didn\u2019t come home.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n

Then she explained.<\/p>\n

Rick controlled Laura\u2019s bank cards.<\/p>\n

He had taken her passport.<\/p>\n

He checked her phone every night.<\/p>\n

Laura had tried leaving once before, but Rick found her at her sister\u2019s house and brought them back.<\/p>\n

Mia said he had threatened that if Laura ever tried again, no one would find her.<\/p>\n

Then Ben mentioned a cabin.<\/p>\n

Mia reluctantly explained that Rick had once taken them to a wooded property owned by his family.<\/p>\n

Behind it was a deep hole.<\/p>\n

Rick had made Ben stand near it while telling Laura that \u201caccidents happen when people don\u2019t listen.\u201d<\/p>\n

I immediately opened the audio recordings.<\/p>\n

There were twenty-three.<\/p>\n

In one, Rick laughed while saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think anyone will believe you instead of me?\u201d<\/p>\n

In another, he threatened that if Laura left again, the children would lose both parents.<\/p>\n

The photos were even worse.<\/p>\n

They showed visible injuries.<\/p>\n

A bedroom door with a lock installed on the outside.<\/p>\n

A handgun beneath the driver\u2019s seat of Rick\u2019s truck.<\/p>\n

Rope, a shovel, and fuel containers in storage.<\/p>\n

Then I found screenshots from Laura\u2019s phone containing threatening messages.<\/p>\n

The last photograph showed four names written on a sheet of paper.<\/p>\n

Laura.<\/p>\n

Mia.<\/p>\n

Ben.<\/p>\n

Rachel\u2014Laura\u2019s sister.<\/p>\n

A date was written beside each one.<\/p>\n

I called 911.<\/p>\n

Police arrived quietly.<\/p>\n

Detective Vasquez watched Mia\u2019s video once and immediately requested a protective response.<\/p>\n

Officers went next door.<\/p>\n

No one answered.<\/p>\n

Laura\u2019s phone went straight to voicemail.<\/p>\n

Then we heard faint knocking from the back of the house.<\/p>\n

Three knocks.<\/p>\n
