PART 2 \u2014 The Children\u2019s Plan<\/strong><\/h1>\n

For almost three months, Mia and Ben had hidden one flash drive every Sunday.<\/p>\n

One beneath my bush.<\/p>\n

Another behind Mrs. Alvarez\u2019s mailbox.<\/p>\n

One inside the stone wall near Mr. Patel\u2019s garage.<\/p>\n

Others were scattered along the block.<\/p>\n

The black trash bag was camouflage.<\/p>\n

They picked up enough garbage to make their routine look normal, then secretly left evidence at houses they considered safe.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy twelve?\u201d I asked Laura.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause Rick always finds things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Laura admitted she had helped create the first recording after the threat at the cabin.<\/p>\n

But she never wanted the children involved.<\/p>\n

Mia refused to stop.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf he controls your phone and everything inside the house,\u201d she had told Laura, \u201cwe need to put the truth somewhere he doesn\u2019t know to look.\u201d<\/p>\n

The children chose neighbors who had been kind to them.<\/p>\n

People who waved.<\/p>\n

People who brought cookies.<\/p>\n

People with visible doorbell cameras.<\/p>\n

Then Detective Vasquez asked the question that mattered most.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere is Rick?\u201d<\/p>\n

Laura looked toward the street.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said he was taking Mia and Ben to breakfast.\u201d<\/p>\n

Within minutes, police issued an alert.<\/p>\n

A toll camera captured Rick\u2019s truck forty miles north.<\/p>\n

He was driving toward the wooded area near the cabin.<\/p>\n

Laura whispered two words.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe hole.\u201d<\/p>\n

Police wouldn\u2019t allow us to follow.<\/p>\n

Laura sat inside my living room wrapped in a blanket while officers searched her home.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Every few minutes, she asked whether someone had called.<\/p>\n

Nobody had.<\/p>\n

Then she looked toward my window.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe children picked your house first.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

She gave a broken smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cRemember when Ben broke your flowerpot last summer?\u201d<\/p>\n

I did.<\/p>\n

A baseball had knocked it from the porch.<\/p>\n

Ben came to my door crying and offered me five dollars from his allowance.<\/p>\n

I refused.<\/p>\n

I told him accidents happened.<\/p>\n

Laura looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said you didn\u2019t make him feel bad after he told you the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

That nearly broke me.<\/p>\n

A nine-year-old child had decided I was safe because I hadn\u2019t punished honesty.<\/p>\n

Two hours later, Detective Vasquez called.<\/p>\n

They had found the children.<\/p>\n

Alive.<\/p>\n

Mia had discovered Rick\u2019s old phone in the back seat of his truck.<\/p>\n

While he was unloading supplies, she managed to trigger its emergency function.<\/p>\n

Police reached them before Rick could take them to the cabin.<\/p>\n

Officers found restraints, fuel containers, and the handgun shown in the photographs.<\/p>\n

Rick was arrested.<\/p>\n

Over the following weeks, investigators searched the cabin.<\/p>\n

They found the hole.<\/p>\n

It had been dug months earlier and partially concealed.<\/p>\n

They also discovered copies of Laura\u2019s identification, insurance paperwork, and a typed letter designed to look as though Laura had written it herself.<\/p>\n

That was the part that frightened me most.<\/p>\n

Rick had not only planned to control what happened.<\/p>\n

He had planned the story people would believe afterward.<\/p>\n

But Mia and Ben had destroyed that possibility.<\/p>\n

Rick could erase one phone.<\/p>\n

One recording.<\/p>\n

One computer.<\/p>\n

He couldn\u2019t erase evidence hidden across an entire neighborhood.<\/p>\n
