Rick eventually accepted a plea agreement that resulted in a long prison sentence.<\/p>\n

His security company collapsed too.<\/p>\n

Investigators discovered that he had improperly retained access to several customers\u2019 home-security systems.<\/p>\n

The investigation grew far beyond our street.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Laura and the children were moved to protected housing.<\/p>\n

For safety reasons, none of us knew exactly where.<\/p>\n

The first Sunday after they left, the neighborhood felt strange.<\/p>\n
