Ryan stood frozen, staring at the wedding ring in his palm.<\/p>\n

Colonel Carter kept his voice calm.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen your mother and I celebrated our fiftieth anniversary, I told everyone our greatest achievement wasn\u2019t our careers. It was raising a son with character.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked directly at Ryan.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, you\u2019ve proven me wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

I carried the twins downstairs, gently rocking them as they cried.<\/p>\n

Ryan moved toward me.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmily, let me explain.\u201d<\/p>\n

I shook my head.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen explain one thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said nothing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs Ashley really pregnant?\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked down.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

The room became unbearably quiet.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen did it start?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAbout seven months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

My knees nearly gave out.<\/p>\n

Seven months.<\/p>\n

That meant the affair had begun while I was pregnant with our twins.<\/p>\n

Colonel Carter closed his eyes for several seconds before speaking.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou cheated on your pregnant wife.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan whispered, \u201cI made a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d his father replied firmly. \u201cA mistake is forgetting an anniversary. This was a series of deliberate choices.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan admitted that Ashley believed he was preparing divorce papers because he had repeatedly promised to leave me once the babies were born.<\/p>\n

Instead, he kept delaying, trying to maintain both relationships until he decided which one benefited him most.<\/p>\n

Ashley had grown impatient.<\/p>\n

Her message was not intended for me.<\/p>\n

It was meant to pressure him.<\/p>\n

Ryan reached for my hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was confused.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stepped away.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were organized enough to lie to two women for months.\u201d<\/p>\n

Colonel Carter opened his briefcase and removed a folder.<\/p>\n

Ryan looked confused.<\/p>\n

\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve already arranged temporary financial assistance for Emily and the boys if she chooses to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tears filled my eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou did that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are the mother of my grandsons,\u201d he answered. \u201cNone of this is your fault.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan looked defeated.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019d choose her over your own son?\u201d<\/p>\n

His father answered without hesitation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m choosing the person who honored her vows.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan lowered his head.<\/p>\n

For the first time since I had known him, no one accepted his excuses.<\/p>\n
