Brandon remained frozen in the doorway.<\/p>\n

His gaze moved from my father to the attorneys and finally to Noah, sleeping peacefully in the bassinet.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is all this?\u201d he asked nervously.<\/p>\n

Dad stayed calm.<\/p>\n

\u201cSit down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brandon gave an awkward laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome on, Robert. This is a hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n

One attorney opened a leather folder.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Mitchell, we\u2019re here at Mrs. Mitchell\u2019s request.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brandon turned to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cSarah\u2026 what\u2019s going on?\u201d<\/p>\n

I took a slow breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor nine months, I made excuses for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

He frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou missed doctor\u2019s appointments.\u201d<\/p>\n

His eyes dropped.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou skipped parenting classes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was busy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou forgot every ultrasound except one.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI had work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd when I needed you the most\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

I paused.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou left me to attend your mother\u2019s birthday party.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence filled the room.<\/p>\n

The attorney placed several documents on the bedside table.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first document acknowledges that Mrs. Mitchell has retained legal counsel.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brandon\u2019s smile disappeared.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe second is a petition for divorce.\u201d<\/p>\n

His face lost all color.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re divorcing me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t decide because of one night.\u201d<\/p>\n

I shook my head.<\/p>\n

\u201cI decided because that night showed me exactly where I ranked in your life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad quietly placed a small photo album beside the papers.<\/p>\n

Brandon opened it.<\/p>\n

Every page held evidence.<\/p>\n

Photographs from medical appointments he had missed.<\/p>\n

Pictures from baby showers he skipped.<\/p>\n

Screenshots of unanswered messages.<\/p>\n

Hospital bracelets.<\/p>\n

There was even security footage from the hospital entrance showing him leaving while I was in labor.<\/p>\n

Dad spoke quietly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou abandoned your wife during childbirth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brandon rubbed both hands over his face.<\/p>\n

\u201cI made one mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I answered.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou made hundreds.\u201d<\/p>\n

At that moment, Brandon\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n

It was his employer.<\/p>\n

He stepped into the hallway to take the call.<\/p>\n

When he returned five minutes later, he looked completely defeated.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe hospital administrator filed a complaint after reviewing security reports and witness statements. My company heard about what happened through social media after one of the nurses shared the story anonymously without identifying patients.\u201d<\/p>\n

His employer had not fired him.<\/p>\n

However, he had been placed on temporary leave while the company investigated because the story had spread online and reflected badly on his leadership role.<\/p>\n

Brandon looked toward Noah.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just want to hold my son.\u201d<\/p>\n

I gently pulled the bassinet closer to my side.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ll have that opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut today isn\u2019t about your feelings.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about the child you chose to leave before he was even born.\u201d<\/p>\n
