PART 2<\/strong><\/h1>\n

The woman introduced herself as Mara.<\/p>\n

She had been Cara\u2019s roommate.<\/p>\n

She drove me to the apartment where Cara had lived and led me into her bedroom.<\/p>\n

Beneath a row of coats sat a dark wooden trunk.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe wrote to you for years,\u201d Mara said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy didn\u2019t she send anything?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mara looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause fear became her excuse.\u201d<\/p>\n

I opened the trunk.<\/p>\n

Inside were dozens of envelopes bundled by date.<\/p>\n

Every one had my name written across it in Cara\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n

The oldest letter had been written three days after she disappeared.<\/p>\n

I opened it.<\/p>\n

The first sentence stopped me cold.<\/p>\n

I am pregnant.<\/p>\n

Cara had discovered the pregnancy only hours before our final argument.<\/p>\n

When I talked about graduate school, Europe, and waiting years before having children, she panicked.<\/p>\n

She convinced herself that telling me would destroy my plans.<\/p>\n

So she went to her mother\u2019s house, intending to return once she knew what to say.<\/p>\n

She never got the chance.<\/p>\n

Complications ended the pregnancy.<\/p>\n

The next letter described a hospital room and Cara facing everything alone.<\/p>\n

One sentence read:<\/p>\n

I lost our baby. Then I lost myself.<\/p>\n

After that came years of letters filled with plans she never completed.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll call tomorrow.<\/p>\n

I bought a train ticket.<\/p>\n

I found your office number.<\/p>\n

Every time, fear won.<\/p>\n

Too much time had passed.<\/p>\n

I would hate her.<\/p>\n

I had probably moved on.<\/p>\n

Then the letters became even harder to read.<\/p>\n

Cara knew where I lived.<\/p>\n

She knew when I changed jobs.<\/p>\n

She even knew when relationships ended because mutual friends unknowingly gave her updates.<\/p>\n

Twice she traveled to my city.<\/p>\n

Twice she came close to my home.<\/p>\n

Twice she turned around.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou knew this?\u201d I demanded.<\/p>\n

Mara nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cI tried to make her contact you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you let it continue.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t make that decision for her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over the following days, Mara showed me places Cara had mentioned in the letters.<\/p>\n

A diner where she once dialed half my number before hanging up.<\/p>\n

A park bench where she sat holding my number on a napkin.<\/p>\n

An apartment building where she once saw me walking inside with Elise, a woman I dated for eight months.<\/p>\n

Cara assumed I was happy and decided not to interfere.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe didn\u2019t know Elise left because I couldn\u2019t stop thinking about her,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Mara looked down.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. Cara never knew.\u201d<\/p>\n

Our final stop was our old college campus.<\/p>\n

Behind a loose brick near the greenhouse, I found a small metal box.<\/p>\n

Inside was an ultrasound photograph.<\/p>\n

And Cara\u2019s final letter.<\/p>\n

She wrote that she had not returned because she expected forgiveness.<\/p>\n

Her diagnosis had simply forced her to recognize how much of her life had been controlled by fear.<\/p>\n

She refused to let fear make one final decision.<\/p>\n

She came back because I was still the only person she could imagine spending the rest of her life with.<\/p>\n

\u201cFive days were never meant to replace ten years,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were the only honest days I had left to offer.\u201d<\/p>\n

I held the letter in my hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish she had trusted me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mara answered quietly.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo did she.\u201d<\/p>\n
