It took me three weeks to finish all 127 letters.<\/p>\n

Some made me miss Cara so badly I could barely breathe.<\/p>\n

Others made me furious.<\/p>\n

She had loved me.<\/p>\n

She had also hurt me.<\/p>\n

Neither truth erased the other.<\/p>\n

One afternoon, Mara asked:<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you hate her?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you forgive her?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mara nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnything simpler would probably be a lie.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eventually, I copied every letter and arranged them chronologically into a private book.<\/p>\n

The original letters remained locked inside Cara\u2019s trunk.<\/p>\n

I wrote one sentence at the beginning:<\/p>\n

Love can be real and still fail people terribly.<\/p>\n

Then I contacted our old college.<\/p>\n

I arranged for a copy of the letters to be stored privately in the archives under restricted access.<\/p>\n

Not because I wanted strangers reading Cara\u2019s pain.<\/p>\n

I wanted a record of what fear and silence could cost.<\/p>\n

Then I created something else.<\/p>\n

The Open Door Fund.<\/p>\n

It provided emergency assistance to students dealing with pregnancy, serious illness, medical emergencies, or situations where they felt they had nowhere safe to turn.<\/p>\n

About a year later, an application arrived from a student named Lena.<\/p>\n

She was pregnant.<\/p>\n

Her family had threatened to abandon her if they found out.<\/p>\n
